When a devoted soul attains Goloka, he rejoices there without doubt, basking in supreme bliss. Endowed with the conch, discus, and mace, he is honored in the world of the Lord. In that sacred realm, one who has observed a fast for five nights should perform a ritual bath; having accomplished this most difficult act, he relinquishes his life there, completing his earthly journey. There exists a place called Pañcapada, a field that is the supreme abode of the Lord. Facing the east within this sanctified ground are two seats of Brahman, and above them, raised by the length of a lotus stalk, is the seat of Viṣṇu himself. Only those pure souls, beloved by the devotees of the Lord, reach these exalted worlds. Freed from the bonds of worldly existence, such a person attains the Lord’s own world. To the west, where a single stream falls, one may attain the world of Brahmā and delight there in Brahmā’s company. There, the fruit of the Vājapeya sacrifices is obtained, and after enjoying these rewards, the soul ascends to the Lord’s own world. If one proceeds five krośas northwest from there, he enters a place where the undivided fruit of ten million great sacrifices is gained. Having enjoyed the rewards of these countless sacrifices, he then attains the supreme abode of the Lord. To the northeast, again five krośas away, stands a circular mountain, five krośas across. By performing the challenging act of fasting for three nights at this place, one is honored in Brahmā’s world for a thousand years. After leaving Brahmā’s world, the soul is honored in the Lord’s own realm. There, the joyful sound of cows is heard, bringing happiness as a result of the Lord’s deeds, and a great, resounding sound fills the air, leaving no doubt of its divine origin. Whoever performs such virtuous deeds is swiftly freed from sin, released from curses and the burning pains of suffering, accompanied by all the hosts of Maruts. O Devi, all this has been explained to you in full, out of a desire to show you favor. For those who follow the Lord’s path, and for the Lord himself, such acts bring ever-increasing delight. Among all gains, this is the highest; among all dharmas, this is the supreme. O illustrious one, it bestows brilliance, prosperity, fortune, and fulfills every desire. For thousands of years, one is honored in the world of the Lord, and by these actions, seven times seven families are delivered from bondage. This sacred knowledge should be imparted to a son, to a disciple, or to one who knows how to serve. Even a single verse or a line of this teaching, when cherished by one who desires the highest state, brings great merit. With supreme affection, the Lord abides, having taken up the eastern direction. Thus, this secret—hidden and bringing joy in all actions—has been revealed. O highly fortunate one, you have inquired about my most sacred field. Thus concludes the one hundred and forty-seventh chapter, entitled “The Greatness of Goniṣkramaṇa,” in the divine scripture of the Śrī Varāha Purāṇa. Now, having heard this most secret and unsurpassed greatness of Goniṣkramaṇa, and having praised the glory of the Lord, the Earth herself spoke: “O Lord of the Universe, having heard this, I am completely fulfilled. Yet, O Nārāyaṇa, Supreme Lord, tell me further the supreme secret.
