Having spoken thus, my heart still burning with anger, I gazed intently at his hermitage. Overcome by the suffering and the flames of wrath that consumed me, Virūpākṣa wandered restlessly, never finding peace, his mind tormented without relief. Afflicted by that searing pain, I found myself unable to move, paralyzed by the force of the curse. In our distress, we resolved, “Let us go, as he has advised, to a place where happiness may be found. Let us approach Rudra and humbly petition him, so that this curse might be lifted.” Then Aurva, steadfast and truthful, spoke: “Never has an untruth crossed my lips. The curse of Rudra can only be removed by this means, and by no other.” He went on to explain, “There are seventy-seven Saurabheyas of great might, O auspicious one. This is known as the ‘departure of the cow,’ a most sacred and supreme tīrtha. One who reaches Goloka through this path rejoices eternally—there can be no doubt. Endowed with the conch, discus, and mace, he is honored in my own world. “There, a person who has fasted for five nights should bathe in those holy waters. Having performed this most difficult act, he relinquishes his life there, attaining the highest merit. In that field is a place called Pañcapada, my supreme abode. There, facing east, are two seats of Brahman, and above them, to the height of a lotus-stalk, is my own seat as Viṣṇu. “Those pure souls, beloved of the Lord’s devotees, reach these exalted worlds. Freed from all worldly existence, they enter my divine realm. Where a single stream falls, toward the west, one attains the world of Brahmā and delights there in Brahmā’s company. Such a person gains the fruit of the great Vājapeya sacrifice, and after enjoying those rewards, comes to my own world. “Proceeding five krośas from there, in the northwest, one attains the undivided fruit of ten million mighty sacrifices. Having enjoyed the rewards of ten million sacrifices, he reaches my supreme abode. To the northeast, again five krośas away, lies a circular mountain, five krośas in breadth. “By performing the difficult vow of fasting for three nights there, one is honored in Brahmā’s world for a thousand years. Upon leaving Brahmā’s realm, he is welcomed and honored in my own world. There, the sound of cows is heard, bringing joy and the fruit of my deeds. A great, resounding sound fills the air—of this, there is no doubt. “Whoever performs virtuous deeds here is swiftly freed from sin. Freed from both the curse and the burning torment, together with all the hosts of Maruts, one finds liberation. O Devi, I have explained all this to you in detail, out of my desire to show you favor. For those who follow my path, and for myself, this brings ever-increasing delight. “Of all gains, this is the highest; of all dharmas, this is the supreme. O illustrious one, it bestows brilliance, prosperity, fortune, and the fulfillment of all desires. For thousands of years, such a soul is honored in my world.” Thus, the path to liberation and supreme joy was revealed, shining with the promise of release from suffering and the attainment of the highest realms.
