Listen, O Śālaṅkāyana, for I shall reveal to you a profound secret, one known to none except the great god Maheśvara himself. Hear now, O noble sage, of the auspicious and sacred place called Śālagrāma. To you alone I grant this knowledge. When I had bestowed this boon upon you, Śālaṅkāyana, I vanished from your sight at that very moment, O Earth. That place, resting upon the lofty mountain peak, is exceedingly dear to me and brings me great delight. Now, O Earth, attend as I speak further of my mysteries. In that sacred region there exist fifteen hidden and holy fords. Among these is a secret field, known as Bilvaprabha, which is especially beloved to me. This field is supremely delightful, veiled in secrecy, and brings happiness to all the devoted who perform virtuous deeds there. Indeed, one who visits Bilvaprabha attains the reward of four great horse sacrifices. Having enjoyed the fruits of these sacrifices, such a person rejoices in my own divine realm. Throughout this region, stones marked with the discus can be found scattered here and there. Know, O Earth, that this sacred expanse stretches for three yojanas in every direction. Anyone who comes here surely gains the merit of three great sacrifices. After enjoying the fruits of the Vājapeya sacrifice, they ascend to my world. Upon the snowy peak, three streams descend together, and it is here that one attains the pure fruit gained from three sacred nights. Having performed the Atirātra rite and enjoyed its fruits, the devotee is honored in my world. There is also a place where the current of a lake issues forth from beneath a jujube tree. At this spot, a person attains the fruit of the Naramedha sacrifice. Having reaped those rewards, the soul delights in my presence. Within this region lies another supreme and secret field of mine, called Śaṅkhaprabha. In Śaṅkhaprabha, the celebrated place known as Gadākuṇḍa is found. There, a person who bathes after fasting for three nights departs this life, having attained virtue and accomplishment. Again, there is a most secret and supreme field of mine called Agniprabha. Whoever bathes there after observing a fast for four nights, at that very place, relinquishes this life, established firmly in my deeds. O noble one, listen further to the wondrous things spoken of in this sacred land. In my supreme field is a secret place called Sarvāyudha. There, after fasting for seven nights, a person should bathe; then, resolved in my actions, he peacefully departs this life. In yet another spot, after fasting for eight nights, a person should bathe, and there, he gives up life, freed from greed and delusion. There is a secret place called Vidyādhara, which is my supreme field. Whoever bathes there after staying just a single night, O man, gives up his life free from passion and fatigue. Within my supreme secret field flows a river named Puṇyanadī. There, one should bathe after staying for eight nights, O noble soul. Thus, O Śālaṅkāyana, have I revealed to you the secrets and merits of the sacred region of Śālagrāma, the hidden fords, fields, and rivers that bestow supreme blessings and lead the devoted to my own world.
