Whether a person dies there or is born, he is born into a pure and devoted family. Moreover, if someone rises early each day and listens to this sacred account, or if one recites daily the story of Koka, O Uṣas, then great merit is attained. Thus concludes the one hundred fortieth chapter of the Śrī Varāha Purāṇa, the divine scripture, entitled ‘The Description of the Greatness of Kokāmukha.’ Now, listen to the glory of Badarikāśrama, the most secret and sacred place nestled on the slopes of the Himalayas. This holy field cannot be reached by anyone, no matter how many extremely difficult deeds they perform. My field, set upon the icy and rocky mountain, is exceedingly rare and precious. There, upon the heights of the rocks, lies the renowned Brahmakuṇḍa. If a person, steadfast in his vows and self-controlled, gives up his breath there, or if, after fasting for three nights, he bathes in those waters, he attains supreme merit. In that field of mine lies the highest place called Agnisatya. Again, if one fasts for three nights and bathes there, the merit is immense. Within Badarī, my hermitage, there is a place known as Indraloka. From the mountain peaks, a great stream descends again and again, nourishing the land. If a man fasts for just one night and bathes in those waters, he is blessed. There is also a holy place in Badarī’s hermitage called Pañcaśikha. Whoever bathes there at the five streams receives great merit. If, after performing extremely difficult deeds, one gives up the breath there, he finds the highest reward. In that field of mine is the sacred place called Catuḥsrota. If one fasts for a night and bathes there, the benefit is profound. Should he abandon his life there after performing the most difficult acts, then, in that sacred field of mine, he reaches the place renowned as Vedadhara. On the slopes of the Himalaya are peaks even greater than the famed four-peaked mountain. Whoever bathes there, having fasted for four nights, attains immense merit. Should he surrender his life there, established firmly on my path of action, he surpasses even the world of the gods and attains my own supreme realm. In that highest field of mine is the Pool of the Twelve Suns. At the mountain’s peak, at the base of a great tree, on a stone surface, whoever bathes there on any twelfth lunar day is blessed. If, after such a bath, he gives up his life there, devoted to my action, then, in that supreme field of mine, he attains the realm known as Lokapala. Amidst the mountain lies my great terrestrial pool. Bathing there on the twelfth day of the bright fortnight in the month of Jyeshtha brings great merit. If one gives up his life there, intent on my deeds, he attains the highest reward. There is a place called Merorvara, within which lies my supreme secret. There, three streams fall, shining with a radiance like gold. Whoever bathes there, having fasted for three nights, is greatly blessed. If, O Devi, one dies there, in that supreme secret of mine, the rewards are beyond measure. There, too, is another excellent ford called Manasodbheda. Even the gods do not know that hidden place which is established there. Whoever bathes there, having fasted for a day and a night, O woman, attains blessings known only to the highest.
