Listen, O noble one, to the sacred account of those holy places and acts that lead beings to My supreme world. There is a place upon the Earth, O Earth herself, where once I lifted you aloft with the force of My mighty tusk. Whoever, at that spot, becomes wholly purified from all sin, surely attains My own world. In another place, five stones are marked with the name of Viṣṇu; there, on the island of Gomeda, My path is followed with devotion. Whoever comes to that island, freed from all sin and with a pure heart, beholds Me directly. Upon that sacred ground, four streams cascade down from the lofty heights of the mountain. One who reaches Kuśa Island, having performed such acts, abides in My worlds, a state so rare that even the gods do not know him—how much less can men or others comprehend such a one. On the island of Puṣkara, those devoted to My deeds are born again, and, cleansed of all sin, they too attain My world. There, five streams fall, hidden among the mountain groves. If a soul is born on Kuśa Island and is steadfast in devotion to My actions, even if he falls from there, he attains the world of Brahmā. There is a rite to be performed: a man should bathe there, having fasted for five nights. Following My path, he dwells first in the radiant worlds of the Sun, but surpassing even those, he then comes to My own world. Elsewhere, O goddess, a single stream pours forth, full and strong, from a mass of rocks. One who fasts for seven nights and is devoted to My deeds, in the seven continents, wanders in the world, steadfast in My actions. Surpassing the seven continents, he finally attains My world. In another sacred place, an auspicious single stream falls from a mountain cave onto the earth. Those born there as Vaiśyas or Śūdras, if devoted to My actions, and having performed a sacrificial rite with companions and proper gifts, come to Me. Again, there is a spot where a single stream falls, sheltered at the root of a venerable banyan tree. As many as there are leaves upon that supreme peak of Mine, so many are the souls who remain there, faithfully following My path. Then, taking on a fiery, luminous form, such a person ascends to My world. There, too, is a place where a single thick stream falls, as abundant as a water jar. One born there, who knows the four Vedas and is devoted to My actions, is especially blessed. Whoever bathes there, having remained for five nights, and if he is devoted to My actions and gives up his life there, attains Me. In that place lies My supreme secret, called Yamavyasanaka. Whoever bathes there, even if only for one night, and then, if devoted to My actions, gives up his life, attains My supreme state. There is also a field renowned as Mātaṅga, which is most dear to Me. Those who bathe there, having stayed for one night, are reborn as learned and pure souls who follow My path of action. Leaving behind the division known as Kimpurusha, they attain My world. In yet another sacred place, a single stream flows, joined by the holy Kauśikī river. One who is born there, in accordance with My deeds, attains the world of Indra. Thus, O beautiful one, these are the holy places and acts which, when performed with devotion and purity, lead souls upwards—through the worlds of the Sun, Brahmā, and Indra—until at last they reach My own supreme world.
