Having performed abundant righteous deeds, a devotee attains my world. For the sake of the happiness of my devotees and to grant them liberation from the bonds of worldly existence, I bestow a rare blessing: such a being delivers ten ancestors before and ten after from the cycle of birth and death. If one recites, among the Bhāgavata texts, this sacred chapter, the soul itself attains liberation. But if one desires success, welfare, auspiciousness, and what is dear to me, one should never recite this teaching with the intent to criticize scripture. Thus concludes, in the Śrī Varāha Purāṇa, within the divine dialogue between the outcaste and the Brahma-rākṣasa, the one hundred and thirty-ninth chapter, named ‘The Greatness of the Boar.’ Now begins the account of the greatness of Kokāmukha, also called Badarī. The holy places have been described to you, and you have heard their glories. Yet, what is that supreme place where you, O Lord, reside in your own form and image? Śrī Varāha replied: Hear now of those places where I dwell, as they are revealed. That place called Kokāmukha, which I mentioned before, is also known as Lohārgala, frequented even by the king of the mlecchas. Behold, with all its sanctuaries, my abode extends throughout this entire world, both moving and unmoving. Yet those who truly know me, O Goddess, and understand my secret and the path of my desire, are rare. Hearing these words, the Earth herself spoke: “How is that excellent Kokāmukha? You ought to tell me about it.” Śrī Varāha replied: There is no place superior to Kokāmukha, nor is there anything dearer to me than Kokāmukha. Whoever, having reached Kokāmukha, returns again—even so, of all the sacred places you have asked about, O Earth, there has never been, nor will there ever be, a place equal to Kokāmukha. My supreme form, which remains hidden and unknown, is present there. That delightful Kokāmukha, O sinless one, which I am describing to you, lies near the mountain known as Jalabindu, from the city upon the earth. One who abandons all attachments there attains my world. From the mountain to the earth, a stream falls like a pestle; whoever bathes in that stream gains the merit of a thousand Agniṣṭoma sacrifices, never falters in his duties, and attains the highest reward. Such a person is born in a vast and pure place, following my path, and beholds my supreme form—of this there is no doubt. No one truly knows this, O Earth, for it is protected by me, Varāha. One who is wholly devoted to my worship is born on the island of Kraunca. Abandoning all attachments, he goes to my world. It is here, O Earth, that you were lifted by the blow of my tusk. Whoever is wholly purified from all sin attains my world. Where five stones are marked with the name of Viṣṇu, on the island of Gomeda, my path is followed. Freed from all sin, with a pure heart, the devotee beholds me. Here, four streams fall, descending from the heights of the mountain. Reaching Kuśa Island, such a person abides in my worlds. Even the gods do not know him—how much less men and others. One devoted to my deeds is born on the island of Puṣkara. Freed from all sin, he attains my world.
