Hari, the Supreme Lord, continued to speak of the nature of purity and atonement. He declared that one who is steadfast in devotion to Him, whose soul is thoroughly purified, becomes His true devotee—of this, there is no doubt. Yet, He also spoke of grave transgressions. If an initiated person consumes liquor, there can be no expiation for such an act. However, if one drinks liquor that is the color of fire as a prescribed act, he is thereby freed from sin. Such a person is not stained by sin, nor does he return to the cycle of rebirth. But if the act is done in violation, the soul is cooked in a terrible hell for fifteen years, taking the form of a boar. After enduring this for one year, the soul is purified, becomes devoted to the Lord’s actions, and regains purity. At this, the Earth, hearing these words, respectfully addressed Hari again. “O Lord of the gods, O Master,” she asked, “what atonement exists, and how might one be freed, for a man who uses the branch of the Kusumbha tree as a broom?” Hari replied, “Such a person is tormented in hell for ten thousand years. However, if he has consumed it, he should diligently perform the Cāndrāyaṇa expiation. Whoever performs this atonement in the prescribed manner is purified.” The Lord continued, “If anyone, O Mādhavi, performs my rites or touches me while wearing another’s garment—especially if it is unwashed—such a person, O Earth, is born with a defective limb in his next birth. For him, O fair-hipped one, I shall declare a powerful atonement: let him observe a fast for eight meals, devoted to my worship, and then go to a sacred body of water. There, he should remain calm, self-restrained, and observant of vows. When the night has passed and the sun has risen, whoever has performed atonement in this way is purified.” Hari then explained the importance of proper offerings: “If one, devoted to my rites, fails to prepare new rice, his ancestors do not eat for fifteen years. For such a person, there is no righteousness, without doubt. But, O highly fortunate one, the prescribed atonement brings happiness to my devotees. By lying on the ground under the open sky, he is purified on the fourth day. By drinking the five sacred products of the cow, one is quickly freed from sin. Abandoning all attachments, he attains my world.” But the Lord also issued warnings: “If one neglects these duties, he becomes as a corpse on earth, a demon—there is no doubt—and remains thus in this world. Now, O noble one, I will declare the atonement by which one is freed from sin: after fasting for eight meals, on the tenth or eleventh day, and drinking the five products of the cow, he is quickly freed from sin. All the ancestors of such a one indeed cross over those obstacles.” He spoke of further consequences: “A leatherworker is born for thirteen years. Having fallen from the state of a boar, one becomes a despised dog. Yet, my devotee, humble and free from offenses, who performs work on the earth according to the proper procedure, is blessed.” Hari added, “Whoever awakens me without the sounding of the drum, for him, O lovely-hipped one, I will declare my favored atonement. On the twelfth day of the bright fortnight of any month, whoever performs work on the earth according to this procedure is freed from sin and receives my grace.” Thus, the Lord revealed the consequences of actions, the means of atonement, and the path to purity and liberation for those devoted to Him.
