Listen, O blessed one, to the sacred narrative of atonement and its fruits, as spoken in the glorious Varaha Purana. If one has committed transgressions, there are means of purification prescribed. For three days, a person should subsist on leaves alone, or, alternatively, on milk. Having performed this penance, especially for those who have worn soiled garments, let it be known: if a devotee, engaged in my actions, knowingly gives food that has been defiled by a dog, the consequences are grave. Such a person will be born as a dog for seven lifetimes, and likewise as a jackal for another seven births. Only after these cycles, when his mind is purified, learned in the scriptures, and devoted to me, will he be born again in a worthy state. Now, O Earth, listen to the powerful expiation for these offenses. For three days, one should eat only roots, then for another three days, only fruits. Following this, for three days, one should partake of curds, and then for three days, rice cooked in milk. In this way, over twenty-one days, bearing auspicious marks, the penance should be observed. But if one eats the flesh of a boar and moves about in this world, he will become a boar himself, wandering the forests for ten years. Thereafter, he is born as a mouse, living for fourteen years, and then as a lizard, appearing in many houses for eight years. Thus, passing through these varied forms, the eater of boar’s flesh endures the consequences of his actions. After hearing all these words of Hrishikesha, complete in every mark, know that this supreme secret—bestowing happiness upon my devotees—has been declared to you. By following these teachings, humans can cross the ocean of transmigration among animals. Furthermore, after eating, one should live on water alone for seven days. Or, one may eat only sesame for seven days, or even stones, as a severe form of penance. Throughout this, one must practice patience, self-control, and freedom from pride. Thus, released from all sins, with consciousness purified and free from fever, the devotee may approach me, even after eating jālapāda. The one who has eaten jālapāda will be born as a crocodile for ten years, and then as a boar for five years. After enduring these forms and performing this difficult atonement, he is born into a noble family. Transcending all actions, he ultimately attains my world, crossing over the dreadful ocean of transmigration. For further purification, one should eat fruit for three days, then sesame for three days. Thus, for fifteen days, with a disciplined and purified mind, one should perform atonement if he desires an auspicious path. Thus concludes the one hundred thirty-fifth chapter, the atonement for the offense of eating jālapāda. Now, O Devi, hear about the sutra of atonement actions. Whoever, after touching a lamp, performs my rites—listen, O highly fortunate and sinless one, as I explain further. Even if this occurs in the house of a cāṇḍāla, it is so; there is no doubt. Yet, my devotee is then born in a pure, bhāgavata household, by which humans cross the hardship of being born in cāṇḍāla wombs. For such atonement, one should eat only once every four days and sleep on a bed under the open sky. Having purified himself and acting according to proper rules, he should remain steadfast on the path of my prescribed actions. By doing whatever purifies worldly existence, auspiciousness is attained. Now, O listener, hear truly the results of my fault and offense. The transgressor becomes a vulture, lord among sky-dwellers, for seven years. Thereafter, he is born as a piśāca, a flesh-eating spirit, for fifteen years. Thus, the fruits of actions and the ways of atonement have been revealed, so that the devoted may find their path to purity and ultimate liberation.
