O righteous one, listen as the divine narrative unfolds regarding the path to my world and the consequences of actions. Even if a person merely touches that by which one would reach my realm, he must undertake a solemn expiation. For twenty days, with a concentrated mind, he should take food only once a day. After this period, maintaining the discipline of eating once daily, he must sit and subsist solely on water. Through this expiation, the person is freed from the sin incurred. O goddess, acts should be performed for him, but now hear of his fall. Such a person is destined to become a mongoose for five years, then a tortoise for ten years. Afterwards, he is born among pigeons for nine years and five more. Yet, he remains at my side, exactly where I am established, attaining perfection because of the offense of wearing black garments. By offering three balls of food for three nights, one is freed from this sin. When purified and devoted, following my path, one who makes offerings for me with unwashed garments incurs a fault. Let me declare this offense, O Earth. Such a person becomes a mad elephant for one birth, then a jackal for one birth, and likewise a horse for one birth. After seven further births, he finally becomes human again—skilled, without fault, and free from pride, as has been revealed by the divine declaration. Know that by the remnants of garments, humans enter the cycle of transmigration. Hear from me, O sinless one, the truth of how those devoted to my actions are freed from sin and its consequences. I shall now declare the expiation for such devotees. One should subsist on leaves for three days, or on milk for three days. This is the prescribed penance for those who have worn soiled garments. If a person devoted to my actions gives what has been defiled by a dog, he becomes a dog for seven births, and likewise a jackal for seven births. Then, with a purified mind, learned in the scriptures, and devoted to me, he is born again. Listen, O Earth, to this powerful expiation: for three days one should eat roots, for three days fruits, for three days curds, and for three days rice cooked in milk. Thus, performing this for twenty-one days, marked by auspicious signs, the penance is fulfilled. Whoever eats boar’s flesh and moves about here becomes a boar for ten years, wandering in the forest. Afterwards, he becomes a mouse, living for fourteen years, and then as a lizard, is born in many houses for eight years. Thus, having passed through such transmigrations, the eater of boar’s flesh completes his journey. Having heard all these words from Hṛṣīkeśa, complete in every mark, know that this supreme secret, which brings happiness to my devotees, has been declared to you. Through this, humans cross the ocean of transmigration among animals. After eating, one should subsist on water for seven days thereafter. One who eats sesame for seven days, or even stones, must make himself patient, self-controlled, and free from pride. Thus, the ways of expiation and the consequences of actions are revealed, guiding souls toward purification and liberation.
