Listen, O Earth, as the divine discourse unfolds regarding the consequences of certain actions and their remedies. The flow that occurs in women during menstruation is a matter of great significance. If a man approaches a woman during this period, he must certainly reside in a state of expiation—remaining apart for ten or five years, as ordained. But, compassionate as I am, I shall declare the means of purification for him. To atone for this act, he should take only one meal a day, maintaining this discipline for ten or seven days. By observing such penance, O Earth, he is released from the impurity that displeases me. Thus, O Earth, adorned in red garments, I have revealed this to you. Yet, hear further: whoever comes to me in darkness, without the light of a lamp, O beautiful one, listen well to the consequence of such a deed. Such a person, O Vasundhara, is destined to fall—he will be born blind, enveloped in darkness for one lifetime. For this, too, there is a path of atonement. With a mind unwavering and fixed on nothing else, he must perform the prescribed penance. Even if he touches that by which one would reach my world, he must take food only once a day for twenty days, with concentrated mind. Thereafter, he should subsist solely on water, sitting in contemplation. By this expiation, he is freed from the sin. O goddess, for those who err in this way, acts of penance must be performed; now listen to the result of their misdeeds. Such a person is born as a mongoose for five years, then as a tortoise for ten years, and after that among pigeons for fourteen years. Yet, he remains near me, exactly where I am established, and by this, he ultimately attains perfection—this is the result of the offense of wearing black garments during sacred acts. To be freed from such sin, one must offer three balls of food for three nights. Thereafter, becoming pure and devoted, and following my path, one is cleansed. But if anyone, with unwashed garments, makes offerings for me, I shall declare his fault, O Earth, and the offense incurred. Such a person becomes a mad elephant for one birth, then a jackal for another, and likewise a horse for one more. After seven further births, he is reborn as a human, now skilled, without fault, and free from pride. This, O god, has been heard by me as you have declared it. Know, too, that by the remnants of garments, humans are drawn into the cycle of transmigration. Listen well, O sinless one, as I reveal the truth of how those devoted to my actions may be freed from sin and its consequences. For them, I shall declare the expiation: one should subsist on leaves for three days, or on milk for three days. Having done so, O highly fortunate one, those who have worn soiled garments are purified. If one devoted to my actions gives something defiled by a dog, he is born as a dog for seven births, and likewise as a jackal for seven births. Only after this, with a purified mind, learned in the scriptures, and devoted to me, is he born again as a human. Hear now the powerful expiation, O Earth. For three days, one should eat roots; for three days, fruits; for three days, curds; and for three days, rice cooked in milk. Thus, by performing this for twenty-one days, marked by auspicious signs, one is purified. And know, finally, O Earth, that whoever eats boar’s flesh and moves about here, incurs further consequences as ordained. Thus have I declared, step by step, the actions, their results, and the means of atonement, so that all who are devoted may find the path to purity and freedom from sin.
