O beautiful one, listen as I explain the means by which offenses are cleansed. The Chandrayana vow, when performed with the proper ritual, serves as a powerful purifier. For anyone who approaches me improperly—without observing the prescribed methods—even if they bring fragrant offerings of sandal and garlands, their devotion does not bear fruit. Having heard these words of Narayana, the steadfast and devoted Earth, resolute in her vow, spoke humbly: “O Lord, after purifying myself, I wish to know the secret practice. By what ritual, having become a devotee on earth, can one truly approach you? This is my doubt, O Lord; I am greatly curious.” Śrī Varāha replied with gentle gravity: “I have explained to you, in its true essence, this supreme and profound secret. Whoever, having renounced all other actions, seeks to approach me must do so in a particular way. Facing east, one should first wash the feet with water, and then wash the hands. Each foot should be touched separately, uttering ‘pañca pañca’ after each touch. Then, three mouthfuls of water should be taken, for this purifies all sins. “Next, performing prāṇāyāma, one should become wholly absorbed in contemplation of me. Touch the head three times, for there Brahman is established. One who is established in non-duality should touch himself, wherever he abides, in remembrance of the unity of all. This is the procedure to be followed when one wishes to approach me. By acting in this manner, my prescribed order is maintained.” Again, having heard the words of Nārāyaṇa, the goddess Earth bowed and asked, “Please explain the process of expiation and purification for those who have erred.” Śrī Varāha replied: “Those who are excluded from my rites, or who, having committed transgressions, approach me improperly, suffer the consequences. Such a one becomes a worm, remaining in that state as is proper—of this there is no doubt. But by what means might one who has acted thus become accomplished again? Whether brāhmaṇa, kṣatriya, vaiśya, or any devoted to my doctrine—if freed from sin, they attain the highest state. “To be purified, one must touch my limbs with a focused mind, contemplating both the moving and the unmoving. I always cherish those who are self-controlled, auspicious, devoted to the Lord, and pure—free from pride, delighting in virtuous acts, and steadfast in devotion to me. “If an angry but pure devotee, having been purified, attains me, he may yet become a frog for three hundred years and a demon for ten more. He may be born blind five, seven, or nine times. He may eat garlic and ash, and move through the sky. By the faults of his own actions, he is tossed into the ocean of worldly existence.” Hearing these supreme and secret teachings, the Earth, her mind agitated and unsteady, was filled with fear and lamentation. “O Lord,” she cried, “hearing this profound and difficult essence, my heart trembles. For the sake of my beloved, which brings happiness to all worlds, I worry for those of little strength, who are free from fear but filled with greed and delusion.” Then, the lotus-eyed Varaha, radiant and compassionate, stood before her, ready to guide her further.
