Listen attentively, O Earth, for I shall explain to you the truth. Know that one who commits the transgression of defiling sacred worship by expelling excrement is condemned to dwell in the Raurava hell for a thousand divine years. Yet, I will now declare the expiation by which such a grave sin may be cleansed. For this, one must endure a bed made of water and another laid beneath the open sky. Thus, gentle one, I have told you the consequence and its expiation for those who violate purity during worship through such acts. With the conclusion of this instruction, the chapter on the expiation for defecation and urination during worship comes to its end in the glorious Varaha Purana. Now, O devotee of my deeds, hear further regarding expiations for offenses committed during worship and related rites, except for those actions performed solely for my sake. One who is devoted to my actions, O fair-hipped one, may fall into folly if not careful. To atone, one must lie in the open sky for fifteen days. This is the prescribed expiation for abandoning the vow of silence during worship. Clad in blue garments, whoever approaches me in this way shall be cleansed of their offense. I shall explain, O fair-hipped one, how such a one may purify themselves: by performing the Chandrayana vow with its proper ritual, the devotee atones for their transgression. If anyone approaches me improperly, without the prescribed method, then, O beautiful one, even offerings fragrant with sandal and adorned with garlands are not accepted. Such is the importance of right conduct. Having listened to the words of Narayana, the steadfast Earth, firm in her vow, addressed me: “Having purified myself, O Lord, you ought to reveal the secret practice. By what ritual, having become a devotee on earth, may one approach you? This is my doubt, O Lord; I am greatly curious.” To this, I, Sri Varaha, replied: “I have explained to you the supreme and profound secret in its true essence. Whoever, having renounced all actions, seeks to approach me must do so with the proper observances. First, facing east, one should wash the feet with water. Then, immediately after, wash the hands in the same manner. Next, touch each foot separately, repeating the words ‘pañca pañca’ after each. Thereafter, drink three mouthfuls of water, for this act purifies all sins. Then, performing prāṇāyāma, the devotee should become wholly absorbed in contemplation of me. One should touch the head three times, for there Brahman is established. One established in non-duality should touch themselves wherever they abide, signifying the unity of all existence. This is the procedure that must be followed by those who seek to approach me. For one who acts in this way, my prescribed order of actions is maintained.” Having heard these words of Narayana, the goddess Earth once more questioned: “You should explain, O Lord, the process of expiation and purification for those who have been excluded from your rites.” I replied: “Those who are excluded from my rites, and whoever, having transgressed against me, seeks to approach me, must know the consequence—they become as a worm, according to what is proper. Of this, there is no doubt. Yet, by what means may one who has erred regain accomplishment? Whether brāhmaṇa, kṣatriya, vaiśya, or any established in my doctrine—if they free themselves from sin, they attain the highest state. Let such a one touch my limbs, focusing the mind on all that is moving and unmoving. I always desire one who is self-controlled, auspicious, devoted to the Lord, and pure—free from pride, delighting in virtuous acts, and devoted to me.” Thus, the compassionate Lord Varaha revealed the truths of expiation, purity, and the path to his grace.
