O Earth, food that comes from a king is regarded as blameworthy. Therefore, listen closely to what I declare. When you establish me through the prescribed rites, O goddess, the food that remains after being offered to me by devoted Bhāgavatas is pure. Upon hearing these words from Viṣṇu, the Earth, steadfast in her vow, spoke: “By what act is such food purified, O Janārdana? Tell me.” Śrī Varāha replied, “By what means do those who partake of the king’s food become purified?” He explained, “By performing one Cāndrāyaṇa and a thorough Taptakṛcchra penance, there is no fault, O Earth. This is my word, especially for those who desire supreme attainment through worship of me.” Thus concluded the chapter on the expiation for eating the king’s food. Now begins the teaching on expiation for not chewing a tooth-stick. Whoever approaches me without first chewing a tooth-stick—this is the matter at hand. Hearing Nārāyaṇa’s words, the Earth, devoted to righteousness, asked, “How can everything perish because of a single transgression?” Śrī Varāha replied, “One single offense can destroy previous merit. A human being, O blessed one, afflicted by sin and possessed of phlegm and bile, loses all the seed of merit by eating without first chewing a tooth-stick.” The Earth then asked, “Tell me the expiation by which my righteousness is not destroyed.” Śrī Varāha answered, “I shall tell you now how humans become purified: by lying on the ground for two and then five days. Thus, O gentle one, I have explained the matter of tooth-sticks. There is no fault in this; indeed, there is no doubt.” With these words, the chapter on the expiation for chewing tooth-sticks was completed. Next comes the teaching on expiation for touching the dead. If, after sexual union, one touches a corpse without bathing, O gentle one, this is a grave offense. For a year, the Earth, having heard from Nārāyaṇa, observed strict vows. She spoke, “How does a man become intent on drinking semen in this way? This is my greatest sorrow; you ought to tell me about it.” Śrī Varāha replied, “Listen, O goddess, to this supreme and secret teaching. This is the sign, O beautiful one, the determination of supernatural offense. Having seen such an act, a man attains the result of that offense. Because of the fault, purification does not occur. O gentle one, householders devoted to my actions—by subsisting on air for one day, they are freed from sin. Having understood the offense, he is not tainted by sin. Expiation brings happiness to my world, O illustrious one.” He continued, “Whoever, excluding my scripture, enters the cremation ground, in the cremation ground they become jackals and eat corpses in that way.” Then the Earth spoke for the welfare of all worlds: “O Lord, for those who have taken refuge in you, where can sin exist, O Master? Tell me the expiation by which one is freed from sin.” Śrī Varāha replied, “Listen, O beautiful one, as you question me. I shall tell you now this excellent, sin-destroying method. By drinking pañcagavya, one is freed from sin. In every way, it must be avoided by every devotee of Bhagavān.” Thus, these teachings were imparted, guiding the Earth and all beings toward purity and righteousness.
