As the sacred conversation unfolded, the Sūta began recounting how Lord Varāha, having bowed reverently to the Earth, addressed her once more. At that moment, the Earth herself spoke, seeking guidance: “O Lord, what should your devoted followers, those who have undergone initiation, do?” No sooner had the Earth finished speaking than a mighty sound, like thunder rolling through the clouds and the beating of celestial drums, filled the air. Śrī Varāha responded, revealing an important teaching: “I am to be contemplated everywhere—but let this contemplation be done secretly, especially in the presence of an assembly.” The Earth, steadfast and pure, foremost among devotees and ever engaged in the Lord’s actions, listened intently to Nārāyaṇa’s words. With hands folded in reverence, she spoke again: “Absorbed in thought of you, O Mādhava, what should be done here? By whom should you be contemplated, you who are beyond thought, transcending mortals?” The Primal One, born of the Unmanifest, heard her earnest inquiry and replied: “By whatever means you contemplate me, devoted to my actions, this is called the ‘Secret Assembly’ initiation, which arises from the seed of the rite. One who is pure and initiated, firmly resolved in my actions, and who receives this Secret Assembly initiation as a devotee—there is no other duty for him. This initiation yields great fruit. It is called Āsurī, by which righteousness is established. He who contemplates me in the secret assembly is the best among the wise.” Śrī Varāha continued, promising to explain the method by which this sacred initiation is received: “Listen, as it is given to a disciple. In the months of Kaumuda, Mārgaśīrṣa, or even Vaiśākha, on the twelfth day of the bright fortnight, the aspirant should observe a strict vegetarian diet for three days. In my presence, on the altar, he should kindle the sacred fire. Then, both disciple and guru, initiated and supremely pure, should proceed.” He revealed the mantra: “That which was upheld by the ancient forefathers, by the god devoted to Brahman, by Bhavodbhava.” With this mantra, the guru leads the disciple to the assembly of attendants. Another mantra is spoken: “O disciple, with the proper rite, receive the goddess born from the southern branch of Narayana.” The Earth, ever attentive, asked: “By which mantra should the procedure for adornment be established?” Varāha replied, affirming the liberating power of devotion to action and answering Vasundhara with words joined to righteousness. He explained the procedures for bathing performed by practitioners, emphasizing those concerned primarily with water. He instructed: “Hear from me, O Vasundhara, how it should be given with the mantra. Quickly prepare the collyrium and the comb. Taking the comb in his hands, recite this mantra: ‘Having taken this comb placed in the hands, be gracious, Narayana; adorn the head. O great one, O lord of the universe, with your own eyes you see the three worlds.’” Next, with this mantra, the virtuous deity is bathed: “O god of gods, this bathing rite prepared by me, accept the golden vessel; be gracious. This handful of water has been arranged by me; bathe, bathe.” After uttering “Salutations to Nārāyaṇa,” another mantra is recited. Finally, Śrī Varāha declared: “He who, according to this procedure, is initiated into my rite—this initiation must not be given to an unworthy disciple, nor to a slanderer or a deceitful person.” Thus, the sacred instructions for the Secret Assembly initiation were imparted, revealing the path of devotion, purity, and reverence for those seeking to contemplate the divine Varāha.
