O Earth, gather your mind with unwavering focus and listen intently to these words. Truly, there is no one who knows my scripture as I do; none other possesses this knowledge. So, with your mind firmly centered, attend to this teaching. First, know of the Agni-tirtha, O noble one—a sacred place radiant in nature and wholly Vaishnava. Simply by bathing there, one attains its reward without any doubt. If a seeker remains there for twenty days and nights, that devotee is assured a place in my world. It is by this tirtha that the wise discern my devotion, which brings true happiness. Remarkably, in the heat of summer, the waters of Agni-tirtha become cool—this is the unmistakable sign of its sanctity. Through its grace, people are able to cross the dreadful ocean of worldly existence. There is also the tirtha known as Vayavya, born of Dharma. Whoever bathes there and performs the daily water-rites attains the complete fruit of the Vajapeya sacrifice. Whether one stays for ten or five days, this is my established rule. Such a devotee is reborn with four arms and is established in my world. The sign by which this tirtha is known marks it as the greatest. On the twelfth day, its recognition is assured. This sacred place is called Shakra-tirtha, the liberator from all worldly existence. Shakra himself dwells in that world, holding the thunderbolt—there is no doubt of this. By fasting for ten nights at Shakra-tirtha, one gains passage to my world. Therefore, O beautiful one, focus your mind and listen to this truth: the mark of Shakra’s sacred place has now been revealed to you, O Earth. At this place, Varuṇa performed austerities for five thousand and seven years. Whatever a steadfast man attains there—whether in life or after death—he moves about freely, without any doubt. Renouncing all attachments, he enters my world. There, a single stream always falls, unwavering in its form. Within the grove of Kubjāmra lies the supreme place called Saptasāmudraka. There, a man attains the fruit of three Aśvamedha sacrifices. From heaven, a twice-born of noble lineage may descend to be reborn, or one who is free from attachment and master of his senses may depart from life at that very spot. Now, O beautiful one, listen as I describe the mark of that sacred place: it is where the pure Gāṅgatā is found, mingling with the waters of the holy Ganges. She partakes, as she desires, of offerings of fragrant garlands and flowers. Just as Dhūmaketu and Agni take delight there, so too does she. Now, in another time, angered, a prince spoke to a princess. He was handsome, attractive, and worthy of kings and noble households. Always, by being face-to-face with him, she became just like him, as she had in the past. Then, seeing him fallen before me, anger arose in my own heart. Hearing the words of both his wife and son, the lord of the people of Kosala pondered deeply. “That statement must certainly be spoken in my presence,” he declared. Then, the king, smiling, addressed his son: “Speak, O fortunate one, what I had previously asked of you.” Thus, O Earth, these sacred places and their stories, their signs and rewards, have been revealed to you. Listen and remember, for their knowledge brings liberation and joy.
