Having explained the mighty dharma in detail, the sage addressed the goddess, saying, “Thus, O goddess, the essence of my profound dharma has been revealed to you.” With these words, the account of the thirty-two transgressions was brought to its close in the auspicious Varāha Purāṇa. Then, turning to the next sacred teaching, the sage spoke: “Now, O fortunate one, listen attentively as I describe the proper procedure for worshipping the gods and the method of expiation. The practice begins with the recitation of a mantra while taking up a tooth-stick for cleansing. When the lamp has been lit, you should purify your hands at that place. After bowing humbly at the feet of the deity, proceed to brush your teeth, reciting this mantra: ‘O Source of the worlds, O Remover of the Sun, O Endless One, O One in the middle—thus I take this earth as the stick for cleaning my teeth.’ “All that you have spoken is indeed the complete determination of dharma. After raising the head, always hold it upon your own head as a mark of respect. The actions involving the mouth should be performed with only a little water, ensuring purity and restraint. “By worshipping with this unfailing mantra, one is released from worldly existence. The mantra to be spoken is: ‘O Lord, accept yourself, your qualities, and your own self with water; let the mouths of all the deities be washed.’ Then, offer a handful of flowers, O Lord, beloved of your devotees, to the knower of mantras, the performer of sacrifice, and indeed the creator of all beings. “Having made your body prostrate in reverence, you should propitiate Janardana. When, through mantras, you have gained the Lord’s recognition and pleasure, even the yogis attain liberation by His will. As His servant, performing all actions for His sake, may the Lord be pleased by the instructions you have followed. “Thus, having performed the rite of mantra, established in devotion to Me, and having undertaken all prescribed acts steadfastly, the knower of mantras and the doer of actions, filled with affection in mind, should recite: ‘In all worlds, I am the accomplished self, and I grant boons by my own act. Whatever I have spoken, forgive; to you, indeed, salutations again and again.’ “Next, anoint your right limb, and then your left limb. With firm resolve, smear the western part of the ground with cow dung, for this purifies the place of worship. Hear now the merits attained by performing these acts: for as many thousands of years as these actions are performed, one is honored in the heavenly realm; for each grain counted, one is exalted in the heavenly world; and for as many thousands of years, one remains established in My world. By these acts, the limbs are purified, and My delight is awakened. “For cleansing, use the powders of Madhuka, Ashvaparna, Rohini, and Karkata, or else take finely ground powder in the hand. If you desire supreme accomplishment, follow these prescribed actions. Take amalaki and the finest fragrant earth for further purification. “Afterward, taking a water vessel, recite this mantra: ‘With your manifest form, accept the bath from me, O sinless one.’ Then, using a golden, silver, or copper vessel, perform the excellent ablution. Afterward, offer a fragrant substance, accompanied by mantra, saying: ‘Born in all worlds, you are united with the true ones. Satisfied by my devotion, accept, O Madhava.’ Thus, the sage lovingly instructed the goddess in the sacred procedures, revealing the path of worship that leads to purity, merit, and the Lord’s boundless grace.
