O sage, the disciple approached the Lord with a heart full of reverence and a mind eager for understanding. With folded hands, he asked, “O Lord, how should one properly receive the sacred water for washing the feet? What are the correct acts of bathing and anointing that must be performed for you? What is prescribed regarding the seat and the bed, and what other duties are to be observed in your worship? He continued, “Tell me, what merit arises for one who observes the sacred twilights, both evening and morning? What is the true benefit of such observance? What acts are appropriate in the spring season, and what should be done in the heat of summer? Which flowers and fruits are suitable to be offered and enjoyed in your worship? By what act does the devotee reach the auspicious Mādhava period, and how is that to be performed? “O Lord, what is the proper measure for your image, and in what way should it be installed? How does the devotee offer you garments of yellow, white, or red? With which substances is the madhuparka—honeyed offering—to be prepared and presented? To what worlds do those ascend who partake of the madhuparka, and in what measure should it be properly offered? “Is it appropriate to perform this act, following the scriptural injunctions, even in public places such as marketplaces? By what ritual formula is the madhuparka offering to be administered to you? After a devotee has eaten the food offered to you, what acts should be performed? Who here partakes of that supreme, all-purifying offering? “O Lord, what is the destiny of those who tread your path with devotion? What is the fate of those who, practicing austerities and penances, approach Mādhava with a pure heart? What is the destination of those who are devoted to your actions, O Krishna? What becomes of those who are steadfast in their devotion to you, and what is the state attained by those who observe your prescribed duties? “What of those men who observe vows, or those who live by alms? What is the destiny of those who die in your sacred places, or those who pass away under the open sky? What becomes of those who have taken to sleeping on beds of thorns as an act of penance? O Krishna, what is the fate of those who are wholly devoted to you in faith, and of those who remain steadfast on the path of your devotion? “O Lord, what is the destiny of those humans who live out their allotted time on earth? O Narayana, what kind of fate is remembered for them, and what rule applies in this regard? What is the destiny of those who are devoted to performing your actions, and of those who bear a lamp upon their head as an offering of light? “What state do those attain who are wholly absorbed in contemplation of you? What is the destiny of those who act according to the virtues of their own duty? O Lord, what is the state they reach, and what is declared to be the eternal one? Blessed one, what is the destiny of him who lies with his head pointing downward? Thus, with a heart full of longing for wisdom, the devotee humbly asked the Lord to reveal the fruits and destinies of all these acts—so that the path of devotion might be understood and followed in its fullness.
