Once, it was by your own supreme power that the mighty demon Ravana was defeated and slain. O Lord, I confess that I do not truly comprehend the fullness of your divine activities. After you created all things, what command did you give? None of us could understand your will at that time. In those primordial moments, there were no rays of light, no stars, and no planets shining in the heavens. Saturn, Mercury, Indra, Kubera, and Yama were not yet present in the cosmos. Apart from the three great gods—Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshvara—none existed in that vast expanse. In her distress, the goddess Madhavi sought refuge and approached with humility. She implored, “O Grandfather, please rescue me, along with the mountains and forests.” Brahma, entering a moment of deep meditation, addressed the earth. He declared, “He is the Lord of all worlds, the foremost of gods, the original creator himself. Whatever action arises for any of us, it is all his doing. He is the one who lies upon Ananta, resting in yogic sleep.” With hands joined in reverence, the goddess pleaded again to Madhava, saying, “I am burdened and have sought refuge with Brahma.” Yet, when the Blessed Lord did not immediately grant her request, she spoke further: “If you are able to rescue me, who am submerged in the cosmic ocean, then with devotion I seek refuge in you. Be gracious to me, O Mādhava. “You are Indra, you are Varuṇa, you are Agni, and you are also Vāyu. You are the Fish, the Tortoise, the Boar, the Man-Lion, and the Dwarf—manifesting in all these forms. Thus, you are seen through yoga and are spoken of, O greatly renowned one. “You are earth, air, space, water, and fire as the fifth element. You are the planets and stars, and the divisions of time—kalās, kāṣṭhās, and muhūrtas. The months, fortnights, day and night, seasons, and years—all these divisions of time, including kalās, kāṣṭhās, the six months, and the six seasons—are all contained and restrained by you. “You are the great mountains: Meru, Mandara, Vindhya, Malaya, and Dardura. Among bows, you are Pināka; among paths of knowledge, you are the supreme Sāṃkhya and Yoga. You are contraction and expansion, the protector, and the eternal sacrifice. Among the Vedas, you are the Sāma Veda, complete with all its limbs and sub-limbs, the embodiment of the great vow. “You produce the nectar, O Viṣṇu, by which you uphold and sustain the worlds. All that exists in this world—what is to be meditated upon and what is not, whatever moves—all is you. You are the sun, you are the turner of the ages, the ascetic, the great ascetic. “Among serpents, you are Ananta; among snakes, you are Takṣaka. You are the playful spirit within homes, the household deities that dwell within. You are the very body of lightning, and among all things electric, you are the greatest brilliance. You are faith itself, O Lord of the gods, and the remover of faults, O Mādhava. “You are Garuḍa, the mighty bearer of the great-souled, and the ultimate refuge. You are victory and triumph, the household deities within every home. You are Bhaga, you are the mark of poison, you are the supreme, of the nature of the highest self. Truly, O Lord of the worlds, you alone are worthy to rescue me, who am sunk in distress.
