दृष्टमात्रस्त्रिणेत्रेण निपपात ततो ऽमबरात्
As soon as he was seen by the Three-eyed One, he fell then from the sky.
यदृच्छया निपतितो यन्त्रमुक्तो यथोपलः
By chance he fell, released from restraint, like a stone.
निपपातान्तरिक्षात् स वृतः किन्नरचारणैः
He fell from the atmosphere, surrounded by kinnaras and charanas.
अर्द्धपक्वं यथा तालात् फलं कपिभिरावृतम्
Like a half-ripened palm fruit, surrounded by monkeys.
निपतस्व हरिक्षेत्रे यदि श्रेयो ऽभिवाञ्छसि
'Fall in the field of Hari, if you desire the highest good.'
किं तत् क्षेत्रं हरेः पुण्यं वदध्वं शीघ्रमेव मे
'What is that sacred field of Hari? Tell me quickly!'
साम्प्रतं वासुदेवस्य भावि तच्छङ्करस्य च
Now, this is destined for Vāsudeva and for Śaṅkara as well.
एतत् क्षेत्रं हरेः पुण्यं नाम्ना वाराणसी पुरी
This sacred field of Hari is the city called Vārāṇasī.
वरणायास्तथैवास्यास्त्वन्तरे निपपात ह
Between the Varuṇā and the Asi rivers, it indeed descended.
वरणायां समभ्येत्य न्यमज्जत यथेच्छया
Entering the Varuṇā, it submerged there as it wished.
लुलंस्त्रिणेत्रवह्न्यार्त्तो भ्रमते ऽलातचक्रवत्
Afflicted by the fire of the three-eyed one, he wandered like a blazing wheel.
नागा विद्याधराश्चापि पक्षिणो ऽप्सरसस्तथा
Nāgas, Vidyādharas, birds, and also Apsarases,
तावन्तो ब्रह्मसदनं गता वेदयितुं मुने
So many went to Brahmā’s abode to inform him, O sage.
रम्यं महेश्वरावासं मन्दरं रविकारणात्
The delightful Mandara, dwelling of Maheśvara, was brought because of the sun.
प्रसाद्य भास्करार्थाय वाराणस्यामुपानयत्
Having propitiated him for the sake of the sun, he brought it to Vārāṇasī.
कृत्वा नामास्य लोलेति रथमारोपयत् पुनः
Naming it 'Lola,' he then placed it again upon the chariot.
सबान्धवं सनगरं पुनरारोपयद् दिवि
With his kin and his city, he again set him in the heavens.
प्रणम्य केशवं देवं वैराजं स्वगृहं गतः
Having bowed to Keśava, the divine lord, Vairāja returned to his own home.
दिवाकरो भूमितले भवेन क्षिप्तस्तु दृष्ट्या न च संप्रदग्धः
Though cast down to earth by Bhava’s gaze, the sun was not burned up.
स्वयंभुवा चापि निशाचरेन्द्रस् त्वारोपितः खे सपुरः सबन्धुः
And by the self-born one, the lord of night-wanderers was set in the sky, with his city and kin.
आराधनाय देवाभ्यां हरीशाभ्यां वदस्व तान्
Tell me, for the worship of the two gods, Hari and Īśa, how it is done.
आराधनाय शर्वस्य केशवस्य च धीमतः
For the worship of Śarva and the wise Keśava,
तदा स्वपिति देवेशो भोगिभोगे श्रियः पतिः
Then the lord of the gods, husband of Śrī, sleeps upon the serpent’s coils.
देवानां मातरश्चापि प्रसुप्ताश्चाप्यनुक्रमात्
And the mothers of the gods also, one after another, have fallen asleep.
सर्वमनुक्रमेणैव पुरस्कृत्य जनार्दनम्
With all things in their proper order, one should first honor Janārdana.
एकादश्यां जगत्स्वामी शयनं परिकल्पयेत्
On the eleventh day, the Lord of the universe should be laid to rest.
कृत्वोपवीतकं चैव सम्यक्संपूज्य वै द्विजान्
Having donned the sacred thread and duly worshipped the twice-born,
लब्ध्वा पीताम्बरधरः स्वस्ति निद्रां समानयेत्
Clad in yellow garments, having received blessings, he should be led to sleep.
कदम्बानां सुगन्धानां कुसुमैः परिकल्पिते
On a bed adorned with the fragrant flowers of the kadamba tree,
सौवर्णपङ्कजकृते सुखास्तीर्णोपधानके
With a golden lotus fashioned and a soft, well-spread cushion,
