जगाम यमुनां स्नातुं सापि शुष्कजलाभवत्
She went to the Yamunā to bathe, but its waters had dried up.
प्लक्षजां स्नातुमगमदन्तर्द्धानं च सा गता
She went to bathe in the Plakṣajā, but as she entered, it too vanished.
सैन्धवारण्यमेवासौ गत्वा स्नातो यथेच्छया
Then she went to the Saindhava forest and bathed there as she wished.
स्नातो नैव च सा रौद्रा ब्रह्महत्या व्यमुञ्चत
Yet, even after bathing, that fierce sin of brahmin-murder did not leave her.
समायुतो योगयुतो ऽपि पापान्नावाप मोक्षं जलदध्वजो ऽसौ
Though endowed with self-control and yoga, Jaladadhvaja did not attain liberation from sin.
तत्र गत्वा ददर्शाथ चक्रपाणिं खगध्वाजम्
Going there, he saw the wielder of the discus, the lord with the eagle banner.
कृताञ्जलिपुटो भूत्वा हरः स्तोत्रमुदीरयत्
Becoming one with folded hands, Hara began to recite a hymn.
शङ्खचक्रगदापाणे वासुदेव नमो ऽस्तु ते
O Vāsudeva, wielder of conch, discus, and mace, I bow to you.
नमस्ते निर्गुणानन्त अप्रर्क्याय वेधसे ज्ञानाज्ञान निरालम्ब सर्वालम्ब नमो ऽस्तु ते
Salutations to you, O infinite, qualityless, unfathomable creator, supportless in knowledge and ignorance, yet the support of all.
त्वया सर्वमिदं नाथ जगत्सृष्टं चराचरम्
By you, O Lord, this entire world of moving and unmoving beings has been created.
प्रजापाल महाबाहो जनार्दन नमो ऽस्तु ते
Protector of creatures, mighty-armed one, Janārdana, I bow to you.
गुणाभियुक्त देवेश सर्वव्यापिन् नमो ऽस्तु ते
Lord of gods, endowed with virtues, all-pervading one, I bow to you.
वायुर्बुद्धिर्मनश् चापि शर्वरी त्वं नमो ऽस्तु ते
You are the wind, intellect, mind, and night; I bow to you.
क्षमा दानं दया लक्षमीर्ब्रह्मचर्यं त्वमीश्वर
You are forgiveness, generosity, compassion, fortune, and self-restraint, O Lord.
उपवेदा भवानीश सर्वो ऽसि त्वं नमो ऽस्तु ते
You are the upavedas, O Lord; you are everything. I bow to you.
लोके भवान् कारुणिको मतो मे त्रायस्व मां केश्व पापबन्धात्
In this world, you are regarded by me as compassionate; save me, Keśava, from the bondage of sin.
दग्धो ऽस्मि नष्टो ऽस्म्यसमीक्ष्यकारी पुनीहि तीर्थो ऽसि नमो नमस्ते
I am burned, I am lost, I have acted without reflection; purify me, you are the holy ford. Salutations, salutations to you.
प्रोवाच भगवान् वाक्यं ब्रह्महत्याक्षयाय हि
The Blessed Lord spoke these words for the removal of the brahmin-murder sin.
ब्रह्महत्याक्षयकरीं शुभदां पुण्यवर्धनीम्
Bestowing auspiciousness, increasing virtue, and removing the stain of killing a Brahmin.
प्रयागे वसते नित्यं योगशायीति विश्रुतः
He dwells eternally at Prayāga, renowned as Yogaśāyin.
विश्रुता वरणेत्वयेव सर्वपापहरा शुभा
Varuṇā is famed here as the remover of all sins, auspicious and pure.
ते उभे सरिच्छ्रेष्ठे लोकपूज्ये बभूवतुः
Both these rivers, the greatest among streams, became honored by the world.
न तादृशो ऽस्ति गगने न भूभ्यां न रसातले
There is nothing like them in the sky, on earth, or in the netherworld.
यस्यां हि भोगिनो ऽपीश प्रयान्ति भवतो लयम्
Even those who indulge in pleasures, O Lord, attain dissolution there.
शुचिस्वरत्वं गुरवो निशम्य हास्यादशासन्त मुहुर्मुहुस्तान्
Hearing of its pure musical quality, the teachers repeatedly laughed at them.
ययौ शशी विस्मयमेव यस्यां किंस्वित् प्रयाता स्थालपद्मिनीयम्
The moon went forth in wonder, where, indeed, the pond-lotus had departed.
दिवापि सूर्यं पवनाप्लुताभिर्दीर्घाभिरेवं सुपताकिकाभिः
Even by day, the sun is veiled by long, splendid banners fluttering in the wind.
आलेश्ययोषिद्विमलाननाब्जेष्वीयुर्भ्रमान्नैव च पुष्पकान्तरम्
Embracing the spotless faces of women, bees do not wander to other flowers.
यस्यां जसक्रीडनसंगतासु न स्त्रीषु संभो गृहदीर्घोकासु
Where, among women gathered for play, there is no union in the long-abiding houses.
न चाबलानां तरसा पराक्रमं करोति यस्यां सुरतं हि मक्त्वा
Nor does the passion of young girls exert force, where intercourse is indeed forsaken.
