लेपादुल्लेखनात् सेकाद् वेश्म संमार्जनार्जनात्
From smearing, scraping, sprinkling, sweeping, and cleaning the house, purity is attained.
मृदम्बुभस्मक्षाराणि प्रक्षेप्तव्यानि शुद्धये
Clay, water, ash, and alkali should be used for purification.
भस्माम्बिभिश्च कांस्यानां शुद्धिः प्लावोद्रवस्य च
By means of ash and water, copper vessels and those used for washing are purified.
अन्येषामपि द्रव्याणां शुद्धिर्गन्धापहारतः
Other substances are purified by the removal of odor.
गर्दभो भारवाहित्वे श्वा मृगग्रहणे शुचिः
A donkey is pure when bearing a load; a dog is pure when seizing an animal.
मारुतेनैव सुद्ध्यन्ति पक्वेष्टकचितानि च
Objects baked in a kiln are purified simply by the wind.
अग्रमुद्धृत्य संत्याज्यं शेषस्य प्रोक्षणं स्मृतम्
The upper portion should be removed and discarded; the remainder is considered purified by sprinkling.
अज्ञाते ज्ञातपूर्वे च नैव शुद्धिर्विधीयते
If the impurity is unknown or previously known, purification is not prescribed.
स्पृष्ट्वा स्नायीत शौचार्थं तथैव मृतहारिणः
After touching (the impure), one should bathe for the sake of cleanliness, as should the bearer of a corpse.
आचम्यैव तु निःस्नेहं गामालभ्यार्कमीक्ष्य च
One should merely sip water, touch a cow, and look at the sun to be purified.
गृहादुच्छिष्टविण्मूत्रे पादाम्भांसि क्षिपेद् बहिः
One should throw the water used for washing feet, as well as leftover food, feces, and urine, outside the house.
स्नायीत देवखातेषु सरोहदसरित्सु च
One should bathe in sacred ponds, lakes with lotuses, and flowing rivers.
नालपेद् जनविद्विष्टं वीरहीनां तथा स्त्रियम्
One should not converse with a person hated by the people, a coward, or a woman (of ill repute).
कृत्वा तु स्पर्शमालापं शुद्ध्यतेर्ऽकावलोकनात्
After touching or speaking with such persons, one is purified by looking at the sun.
पतितापविद्धनग्नाश्चाण्डालाद्यधमाश्च ये
Those who are fallen, expelled, naked, or the lowest such as outcastes and the like—
अमीषां श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वतो लक्षणानि हि
I wish to hear, in truth, the characteristics of these persons.
तावुभौ सूतिकेत्युक्तौ तयोरन्नं विगर्हितम्
Both of them are called 'sūtikā', and their food is considered impure.
पितृदेवार्चनाद्धीनः स षण्ढः परिगीयते
He who neglects the worship of ancestors and gods is described as a eunuch.
न परत्रार्थमुद्यक्तो स मार्जारः प्रकीर्तितिः
He who does not strive for the welfare of the next world is called a cat.
तमाहुराखुं तस्यान्नं भुक्त्वा कृच्छ्रेण सुद्ध्यति
They call him a rat; after eating his food, one is purified only with difficulty.
नित्यं परगुणद्वेषी स श्वान इति कथ्यते
He who always hates the virtues of others is referred to as a dog.
तमाहुः कुक्कुटं देवास्तस्याप्यन्नं विगर्हितम्
The gods call him a rooster, and his food too is considered impure.
अनापदि स विद्वद्भिः पतितः परिकीर्त्यते
If not in distress, he is declared fallen by the learned.
गोब्राह्मणस्त्रीवधकृदपविद्धः स कीर्त्यते
He who kills a cow, a Brahmin, or a woman is called defiled.
ते नग्नाः कीर्तिताः सद्भिस् तेषामन्नं विगर्हितम्
They are called naked by the virtuous, and their food is considered impure.
शरणागतं यस्त्यजति स चाण्डालो ऽधमो नरः
He who abandons one who has sought refuge is a cāṇḍāla, the lowest of men.
कुण्डाशी यश्च तस्यान्नं भुक्त्वा चान्द्रायणं चरेत्
One who eats from a pit, after eating his food, should perform the cāndrāyana expiation.
भुक्त्वान्नं तस्य शुद्ध्येत त्रिरात्रोपोषितो नरः
After eating his food, a man is purified by fasting for three nights.
कदर्यस्यापि शुद्ध्येत त्रिरात्रोपोषितो नरः
Even after eating the food of a miser, a man is purified by fasting for three nights.
न तु नैमित्तिकोच्छेदः कर्त्तव्यो हि कथञ्चन
But a ritual cutting for a specific purpose should never be performed under any circumstances.
