भिन्नासनभाजनादीन् दूरतः परिवर्जयेत्
One should avoid broken seats, vessels, and similar items from a distance.
पूर्णासु योषित्परिवर्जयेत भद्रासु सर्वाणि समाचरेत
When women are present in full number, one should avoid them; but in auspicious gatherings, one may participate in all activities.
बुधेषु योषिन्न समाचरेत शेषेषु सर्वाणि सदैव कुर्यात्
With wise women, one should not engage in such acts; with others, one may always perform all actions.
मूले मृगे भाग्रपदासु मांसं योषिन्मघाकृत्तिकयोत्तरासु
At the root, in the forest, on the Bhāgra path, one should avoid meat; as well as with women during the lunar mansions Maghā, Kṛttikā, and Uttarā.
भुञ्जीत नैवेह च दक्षिणामुखो न च प्रतीच्यामभिभोजनीयम्
One should not eat facing south, nor should one eat facing west in this world.
माल्यान्नपानं वसनानि यत्नतो नान्यैर्धृतांश्चापि हि धारयेद् बुधः
A wise person should not wear garlands, food, drink, or garments that have been handled by others.
ग्रहोपरागे स्वजनापयाते मुक्त्वा च जन्मर्क्षगते शशङ्के
During an eclipse, when relatives have departed, and when the moon is in the birth asterism, one should abstain.
गात्राणि चैवाम्बरपाणिना च स्नातो विमृज्याद् रजनीचरेश
O lord of night-wanderers, after bathing, one should dry the limbs and garments with the hand.
अक्रोधना न्यायपरा अमत्सराः कृषीवला ह्योषधयश्च यत्र
Where there are people free from anger, devoted to justice, without envy, farmers, and medicinal plants,
जनो ऽपि नित्योत्सवबद्धवैरः सदा जिगीषुश्च निशाचरेन्द्र
O lord of night-wanderers, even the people there are always engaged in festivals, bound by enmity, and ever eager to conquer.
यद्भोज्यं च समुद्दिष्टं कथयिष्यामहे वयम्
We shall now declare what food is prescribed to be eaten.
अस्नेहा व्रीहयः श्लक्ष्णा विकाराः पयसस्तथा
Smooth, oil-free rice and products of milk are likewise to be eaten.
तद्वद् द्विदलकादीनि भोज्यानि मनुरब्रवीत्
Similarly, split pulses and the like are declared as food by Manu.
शैलदारुमयानां च तृणमूलौषधान्यपि
Also, the roots and grains of grasses, and those from mountain trees, are to be considered.
वल्कलानामशेषाणामम्बुना शुद्धिरिष्यते
For all types of bark garments, purification is achieved with water.
कार्पासिकानां वस्त्राणां सुद्धिः स्यात्सह भस्मना
For cotton garments, purification is accomplished together with ash.
पुनः पाकेन भाण्डानां मृन्मयानां च मेध्यता
Earthen vessels become pure again by reheating.
रथ्यागतमविज्ञातं दासवर्गेण यत्कृतम्
What is found on the road, of unknown origin, or done by a group of servants—
चेष्टितं बालवृद्धानां बालस्य च मुखं शुचि
The actions of children and the elderly, and the mouth of a child, are pure.
वाग्विप्रुषो द्विजेन्द्राणां संतप्ताश्चाम्बुबिन्दवः
The drops of speech from the best of twice-born, and water drops heated by the sun, are pure.
लेपादुल्लेखनात् सेकाद् वेश्म संमार्जनार्जनात्
From smearing, scraping, sprinkling, sweeping, and cleaning the house, purity is attained.
मृदम्बुभस्मक्षाराणि प्रक्षेप्तव्यानि शुद्धये
Clay, water, ash, and alkali should be used for purification.
भस्माम्बिभिश्च कांस्यानां शुद्धिः प्लावोद्रवस्य च
By means of ash and water, copper vessels and those used for washing are purified.
अन्येषामपि द्रव्याणां शुद्धिर्गन्धापहारतः
Other substances are purified by the removal of odor.
गर्दभो भारवाहित्वे श्वा मृगग्रहणे शुचिः
A donkey is pure when bearing a load; a dog is pure when seizing an animal.
मारुतेनैव सुद्ध्यन्ति पक्वेष्टकचितानि च
Objects baked in a kiln are purified simply by the wind.
अग्रमुद्धृत्य संत्याज्यं शेषस्य प्रोक्षणं स्मृतम्
The upper portion should be removed and discarded; the remainder is considered purified by sprinkling.
अज्ञाते ज्ञातपूर्वे च नैव शुद्धिर्विधीयते
If the impurity is unknown or previously known, purification is not prescribed.
स्पृष्ट्वा स्नायीत शौचार्थं तथैव मृतहारिणः
After touching (the impure), one should bathe for the sake of cleanliness, as should the bearer of a corpse.
आचम्यैव तु निःस्नेहं गामालभ्यार्कमीक्ष्य च
One should merely sip water, touch a cow, and look at the sun to be purified.
