भूरादि कृत्वा भुवनानि सप्त ददन्तु सर्वे मम सुप्रभातम्
Let the earth and the seven worlds, having made them, all give me an auspicious morning.
दुःस्वप्ननाशो ऽनघ सुप्रभातं भवेच्च सत्यं भगवत्प्रसादात्
Let the destruction of bad dreams occur, O sinless one; may the morning be auspicious, truly, by the grace of the Blessed Lord.
उत्थाय पश्चाद्धरिरित्युदीर्य गच्छेत् तदोत्सर्गविधिं हि कर्तुम्
Rising up, one should utter 'Hari' and proceed, for it is necessary to perform the prescribed act of evacuation.
कुर्यादथोत्सर्गमपीह गोष्ठे पूर्वापरां चैव समाश्रितो गाम्
Then, one should evacuate in the cowshed, having taken shelter of a cow, both before and after.
तथोभयोः पञ्च चतुस्तथैकां लिङ्गे तथैकां मृदमाहरेत
Likewise, for both acts, one should take five, four, and one portions, and for the organ and for clay, one portion each.
वल्मीकमृच्चैव हि शौचनाय ग्राह्य सदाचारविदा नरेण
For cleanliness, one should take ant-hill earth and clay, as taught by those of good conduct.
समाचमेदद्भिरफेनिलाभिरादौ परिमृज्य मुखं द्विरद्भिः
Having rinsed the mouth twice with water free from foam, one should properly cleanse it at the beginning.
केशांस्तु संशोध्य च दन्तधावनं कृत्वा तथा दर्पणदर्शनं च
After cleaning the hair and brushing the teeth, one should also look into a mirror.
होमं च कृत्वालभनं शुभानां कृत्वा बहिर्निर्गमनं प्रशस्तम्
Having performed the homa and adorned oneself with auspicious things, it is commendable to go outside.
मृद्गोमयं स्वस्तिकमक्षतानि लाजामधु ब्राह्मणकन्यकां च
Clay, cow dung, the swastika, unbroken grains, roasted rice, honey, and a Brahmin maiden should be used.
अश्वत्थवृक्षं च समालभेत ततस्तु कुर्यान्निजजातिधर्मम्
One should also worship the Ashvattha tree, and then perform the duties of one's own caste.
तेनार्थसिद्धिं समुपाचरेत नासत्प्रलापं न च सत्यहीनम्
By this, one attains the desired result; one should not engage in false speech nor in what lacks truth.
निन्द्यो भवेन्नैव च धर्मःएदी संगं न चासत्सु नरेषु कुर्यात्
One should not become blameworthy, nor should one abandon dharma; one should not associate with unrighteous people.
आगारशून्येषु महीतलेषु रजस्वलास्वेव जलेषु वीर
On empty ground, in deserted houses, with menstruating women, or in water, O hero,
न कर्त्तव्यं गृहस्थेन वृता दारपरिग्रहम्
A householder should not engage in sexual union in these circumstances.
वृथा पशुघ्नः प्राप्नोति पातकं नरकप्रदम्
The one who kills animals without cause incurs sin that leads to hell.
भेतव्यं च भवेल्लोके वृथादारपरिग्रहात्
One should fear in this world the consequences of taking another's wife without cause.
परस्वं नरकायैव परदाराश्च मृत्यवे
Another's property leads to hell, and another's wife leads to death.
उद्क्यादर्शनं स्पर्शं संभाषं च विवर्जयेत्
One should avoid seeing, touching, or conversing with them.
तथैव स्यान्न मातुश्च तथा स्वदुहितुस्त्वपि
Likewise, this applies to one's mother and also to one's own daughter.
भिन्नासनभाजनादीन् दूरतः परिवर्जयेत्
One should avoid broken seats, vessels, and similar items from a distance.
पूर्णासु योषित्परिवर्जयेत भद्रासु सर्वाणि समाचरेत
When women are present in full number, one should avoid them; but in auspicious gatherings, one may participate in all activities.
बुधेषु योषिन्न समाचरेत शेषेषु सर्वाणि सदैव कुर्यात्
With wise women, one should not engage in such acts; with others, one may always perform all actions.
मूले मृगे भाग्रपदासु मांसं योषिन्मघाकृत्तिकयोत्तरासु
At the root, in the forest, on the Bhāgra path, one should avoid meat; as well as with women during the lunar mansions Maghā, Kṛttikā, and Uttarā.
भुञ्जीत नैवेह च दक्षिणामुखो न च प्रतीच्यामभिभोजनीयम्
One should not eat facing south, nor should one eat facing west in this world.
माल्यान्नपानं वसनानि यत्नतो नान्यैर्धृतांश्चापि हि धारयेद् बुधः
A wise person should not wear garlands, food, drink, or garments that have been handled by others.
ग्रहोपरागे स्वजनापयाते मुक्त्वा च जन्मर्क्षगते शशङ्के
During an eclipse, when relatives have departed, and when the moon is in the birth asterism, one should abstain.
गात्राणि चैवाम्बरपाणिना च स्नातो विमृज्याद् रजनीचरेश
O lord of night-wanderers, after bathing, one should dry the limbs and garments with the hand.
अक्रोधना न्यायपरा अमत्सराः कृषीवला ह्योषधयश्च यत्र
Where there are people free from anger, devoted to justice, without envy, farmers, and medicinal plants,
जनो ऽपि नित्योत्सवबद्धवैरः सदा जिगीषुश्च निशाचरेन्द्र
O lord of night-wanderers, even the people there are always engaged in festivals, bound by enmity, and ever eager to conquer.
