सोमविक्रयिणो ये च वेदविक्रयिणस्तथा
Those who sell Soma, and likewise those who sell the Vedas,
कूटसाक्ष्यप्रदा ये च ते महारौरवे स्थिताः
And those who give false testimony—these all dwell in the great Raurava hell.
तावच्चैवान्धतामिस्रे असिपत्रवने ततः
For so long, they remain in Andhatamisra and then in the forest of sword-leaves.
प्रपातो भवते तेषां यैरिदं दुष्कृतं कृतम्
A precipice appears for those by whom these evil deeds were done.
ते सर्वे क्रमशः प्रोक्ताः कृतघ्ने लोकनिन्दिते
All these have been described in order—those who are ungrateful and reviled by the world.
महोरगाणां प्रवरो ऽप्यनन्तो यथा च भूतेषु मही प्रधाना
Just as Ananta is foremost among great serpents, and earth is chief among beings,
क्षेत्रेषु यद्वत्कुरुजङ्गलं वरं तीर्थेषु यद्वत् प्रवरं पृथूदकम्
As the cultivated field is best among lands, and among sacred fords, the broad waters are supreme,
लोकेषु यद्वत्सदनं विरिञ्चेः सत्यं यथा धर्मविधिक्रियासु
As the abode of Brahmā is preeminent among worlds, and truth among acts prescribed by dharma,
तपोधनानामपि सुम्भयोनिः श्रुतिर्वरा यद्वदिहागमेषु
As the Sumbha lineage is foremost among ascetics, and revelation is best among scriptures here,
मनुः स्मृतीनां प्रवरो यथैव तिथीषु दर्शा विषुवेषु दानम्
Just as Manu is foremost among law codes, the new and full moon among lunar days, and giving at solstices,
भवान् यथा राक्षससत्तमेषु पाशेषु नागस्तिमितेषु बन्धः
As you are among the best of Rākṣasas, as the bond is among the tied Nāgas,
पुष्पेषु जाती नगरेषु काञ्ची नारीषु रम्भा श्रमीणां गृहस्थः
Among flowers, the jasmine; among cities, Kāñcī; among women, Rambhā; among the weary, the householder.
फलेषु चूतो मुकुलेष्वशोकः सर्वौषधीनां प्रवरा च पथ्या
Among fruits, the mango is foremost; among buds, the ashoka; and among all medicinal herbs, pathyā is supreme.
श्वेतेषु दुग्धं प्रवरं यथैव कार्पासिकं प्रावरणेषु यद्वत्
Among white substances, milk is considered the best, just as cotton is preeminent among coverings.
शाकेषु मुख्या त्वपि काकमाची रसेषु मुख्यं लवणं यथैव
Among vegetables, kākamācī is principal; among flavors, salt is the chief.
महीरुहेष्वेव यथा वटश्च यथा हरो ज्ञानवतां वरिष्ठः
Among trees, the banyan stands out; just as Śiva is the highest among the wise.
दुर्गेषु रौद्रेषु निशाचरेश नृपातनं वैतरणी प्रधाना
Among fortresses and fierce places, the lord of night-dwellers, Vaitaraṇī, is the foremost in causing the downfall of kings.
न निष्कृतिश्चास्ति कृतघ्नवृत्तेः सुहृत्कृतं नाशयतो ऽब्दकोटिभिः
There is no atonement for the destroyer of friends; even after billions of years, the sin remains unremoved.
जम्बूद्वीपस्य संस्थानं कथयन्तु महर्षयः
Let the great sages describe the structure of Jambūdvīpa.
नवभेदं सुविस्तीर्णं स्वर्गसोक्षफलप्रदम्
It has nine divisions, vast in extent, and grants the fruits of heaven and liberation.
पूर्व उत्तरतश्चापि हिरण्यो राक्षसेश्वर
To the east and north is Hiraṇya, lord of the rākṣasas.
भारतो दक्षिणे प्रोक्तो हरिर्दक्षिणपशचिमे
Bhārata is said to be in the south; Hari is in the southwestern region.
उत्तरे च कुरुर्वर्षः कल्पवृक्षसमावृतः
In the north is the land of Kuru, surrounded by wish-fulfilling trees.
इलावृताद्या ये चाष्टौ वर्षं मुक्त्वैव भारतम्
Besides Bhārata, there are eight regions beginning with Ilāvṛta.
विपर्ययो न तेष्वस्ति नोत्तमाधममध्यमाः
There is no reversal among them; none are superior, inferior, or intermediate.
सागरान्तरिताः सर्वे अगम्याश्च परस्परम्
All are separated by oceans and are inaccessible to each other.
नागद्वीपः कटाहश्च सिंहलो वारुणस्तथा
Nāga Island, Kaṭāha, Siṃhala, and Vāruṇa are likewise mentioned.
कुमाराख्यः परिख्यातो द्वीपो ऽयं दक्षिणोत्तरः
The island called Kumāra is described as lying between the south and north.
आन्ध्रा दक्षिमते वीर तुरुष्कास्त्वपि चोत्तरे
The Andhras are in the south, O hero, and the Turushkas are in the north.
इज्यायुद्धवणिज्याद्यैः कर्मभिः कृतपावनाः
They are purified by acts such as worship, battle, and trade.
