योजनानां परिख्यातमष्टमं नरकोत्तमम्
The eighth, renowned as Narakottama, is measured in yojanas.
करपत्रस्तथैवोक्तस्तथान्यः श्वानभोजनः
Karapatra is likewise named, and another is Śvānabhojana.
तथाष्टादशमी प्रोक्ता घोरा वैतरणी नदी
The eighteenth is said to be the dreadful river Vaitaraṇī.
संशोषणो नाम तथाप्यनन्तः प्रोक्तास्तवैते नरकाः सुकेशिन्
There is also Saṃśoṣaṇa, and Ananta is named; these, O Sukeśin, are your hells.
एतद् वदन्तु विप्रेन्द्राः परं कौतूहलं मम
O best of Brāhmaṇas, tell me this; my curiosity is great.
स्वकर्मफलभोगार्थं नरकान् मे शृणुष्व तान्
Hear from me about those hells which are for the experience of the fruits of one's own actions.
ये पुराणेतिहासार्थान् नाभिनन्दन्ति पापिनः
Those sinners who do not honor the meanings of Purāṇas and Itihāsas—
याज्योपाध्याययोर्यैश्च कृतो भेदो ऽधमैर्मिथः
And those lowly ones who cause division between the sacrificer and the teacher—
करपत्रेण पाट्यन्ते ते द्विधा यमकिङ्करैः
They are split in two by the servants of Yama with a saw called Karapatra.
बालव्यजनहर्त्तारः करम्भसिकताश्रिताः
Those who steal a child's fan or take food mixed with sand—
स द्विधा कृष्यते मूढस्तीक्ष्णतुण्डैः खगोत्तमैः
That deluded one is cut in two by birds with sharp beaks.
तस्योपरि तुदन्तस्तु तुण्डैस्तिष्ठन्ति पत्त्रिणः
Above him, the birds stand and strike with their beaks.
वज्रतुण्डनखा जिह्वामाकर्षन्ते ऽस्य वायसाः
Crows with beaks and claws like thunderbolts tear at his tongue.
मज्जन्ते पूयविम्मूत्रे त्प्रतिष्ठे ह्यधोसुखाः
They sink, facing downward, into filth, pus, and urine.
अभुक्तवत्सु ये ऽश्नन्ति बालपित्रग्निमातृषु
Those who eat before feeding children, fathers, fire, or mothers—
सूचीमुखाश्च जायन्ते क्षुधार्त्ता गिरिविग्रहाः
They are born as Sūcīmukhas, tormented by hunger, with bodies like mountains.
विड्भोजनं राक्षसेन्द्र नरकं ते व्रजन्ति च
O king of the Rākṣasas, those who eat excrement go to hell.
असंविभज्य भुञ्जन्ति ते यान्ति श्लेष्मभोजनम्
Those who eat without sharing are consigned to food made of phlegm.
क्षिप्यन्ते हि करास्तेषां तप्तसुम्भे सुदारुणे
Their hands are cast into terribly heated iron cauldrons.
तेषां नेत्रगतो वह्निर्धम्यते यमकिङ्करैः
Fire is blown into their eyes by the servants of Yama.
जामयो गुरवो वृद्धा यैः संस्पृष्टाः पदा नृभिः
Those men who have touched wives, elders, or teachers with their feet—
क्षिप्यन्ते रौरवे घोरे ह्याजानुपरिदाहिनः
They are thrown into the dreadful Raurava hell, burning up to their knees.
तेषामयोगुडास्तप्ताः क्षिप्यन्ते वदने ऽद्भुताः
For them, balls of heated iron are cast into their mouths, astonishing to behold.
निन्दा निशामिता यैस्तु पापानामिति कुर्वताम्
Those who observe and utter slander against sinners—
श्रवणेषु निखन्यन्ते धर्मराजस्य किङ्करैः
Are pierced in their ears by the servants of Dharmarāja.
कूपवापीतडागांश्च भङ्क्त्वा विध्वंसयन्ति ये
Those who break and destroy wells, ponds, and reservoirs—
कर्त्तिकाभिः सुतीक्ष्णीभिः सुरौद्रैर्यमकिङ्करैः
Are cut with very sharp, dreadful knives by the servants of Yama.
तेषां गुदेव चान्त्राणि विनिःकृन्तन्ति वायसाः
For them, even their intestines are torn out at the anus by crows.
दुर्भिक्षे संभ्रमे चापि स श्वभोज्ये निपात्यते
In times of famine or confusion, they are thrown among food meant for dogs.
पतन्ति यन्त्रपीडे ते ताड्य मानास्तु किङ्करैः
Those who are tormented by mechanical devices are struck and beaten by the servants.
