दिग्वासा वृषभारूढो लोकक्षयकरो भवान्
You, clothed with the directions, riding the bull, are the destroyer of worlds.
निर्दग्धुकामस्त्वनिशं ददर्श भगवानजः
The unborn Lord, wishing to burn him constantly, gazed at him.
श्वेतं च रक्तं कनकावदातं नीलं तथा पिङ्गजटं च शुभ्रम्
White, red, golden-bright, blue, and tawny-haired, and also radiant,
समाहतस्याथ जलस्य बुद्बुदा भवन्ति किं तेषु पराक्रमो ऽस्ति
When water is agitated, bubbles arise—do they possess any power?
नखाग्रेण शिरश्छिन्नं ब्राह्मं परुषवादिनम्
With the tip of his nail, he severed the head of the Brahmin who spoke harshly.
पतते न कदाचिच्च तच्छङ्करकराच्छिरः
That head never falls from the hand of Śaṅkara.
सृष्टस्तु पुरुषो धीमान् कवची कुण्डली शरी
A wise man was created, armored, adorned with earrings and a body.
चतुर्भुजो महातूणी आदित्यसमदर्शनः
Four-armed, bearing a great quiver, with a radiance equal to the sun.
भवान् पापसमायुक्तः पापिष्ठं को जिघांसति
You are associated with sin—who seeks to kill one most sinful?
त्रपायुक्तो जगामाथ रुद्रो बदरिकाश्रमम्
Then, filled with shame, Rudra went to the hermitage of Badarikā.
सरस्वती यत्र पुण्या स्तन्दने सरितां वरा
Where the sacred Sarasvatī, best of rivers, flows in the valley.
भिक्षां प्रयच्छ भगवन् महाकापालिको ऽस्मि भोः
Grant me alms, O Lord; I am the great Kāpālika, O sir.
सव्यं भुजं ताडयस्व त्रिशूलेन महेश्वर
Strike with the trident, O Maheshvara, using your left arm.
सव्यं नारायणभुजं ताडयामास वेगवान्
With great speed, he struck Narayana's left arm.
एका गगनमाक्रम्य स्थिता ताराभिमम्डिता
One, ascending the sky, stood adorned with stars.
अत्रिस्तस्मात् समुद्भूतो दुर्वासाः शङ्करांशतः
From that, Durvasa arose, sprung from a portion of Shankara.
तस्माच्छिशुः समभवत् संनद्धकवचो युवा
From that, a youth appeared, armored and ready.
इत्थं ब्रुवन् कस्य विशातयामि स्कन्धाच्छिरस् तालफलं यथैव
Thus speaking, he asked: Whose shoulder shall I strike off, as one would a palm fruit from its stalk?
निपातयैनं नर दुष्टवाक्यं ब्रह्मात्मजं सूर्यशतप्रकाशम्
Cast down this man, the son of Brahma, whose wicked words shine like a hundred suns.
जग्राह तूणानि तथाक्षयाणि युद्धाय वीरः स मतिं चकार
The hero took inexhaustible arrows and resolved upon battle.
दिव्यं सहस्रं परिवत्सराणां ततो हरो ऽभ्येत्य विरञ्चिमूचे
After a thousand divine years, Hara approached and spoke to Viranchi.
महापृषत्कैरभिपत्य ताडितस्तदद्भुतं चेह दिशो दशैव
Assailed by mighty arrows, he was struck, and wondrously, all ten directions here.
पराजितश्चेष्यते ऽसौ त्वदीयो नरो मदीयः पुरुषो महात्मा
Defeated, your man will act; my own great-souled man will do so.
नरं नरस्यैव तदा स विग्रहे चिक्षेप धर्मप्रभवस्य देवः
Then, in the conflict, the god, source of dharma, hurled man against man.
संतापमगमद् ब्रह्मंश्चिन्तया व्याकुलेन्द्रियः
Brahma was overcome with distress, his senses agitated by worry.
सरक्तमूर्द्धजा भीमा ब्रह्महत्या हरान्तिकम्
Terrible, with blood-soaked hair, Brahma-hatya approached Hara.
कासि त्वमागता रौद्रे केनाप्यर्थेन तद्वद
Who are you, arrived here in wrath? For what reason? Tell me that.
ब्रह्मवध्यास्मि संप्राप्तां मां प्रोतीच्छ त्रिलोचन
I am Brahma-hatya, come to you; accept me, O Three-eyed One.
त्रिशूलपाणिनं रुद्रं संप्रतापितविग्रहम्
Rudra, holding the trident, his form afflicted.
आगच्छन्न ददर्शाथ नरनारायणावृषी
As he approached, he saw the sages Nara and Narayana.
