ज्यामघो विष्णुनिलयं गत इत्यनुशुश्रुमः
We have heard that Jyāmagha has gone to the abode of Vishnu.
व्रजन्ति नरशार्दूल विष्णुलोकजिगीषवः
O tiger among men, those desiring to attain Vishnu's world proceed there.
पौराणिकान् विशेषेण सदाचाररताञ्शुचीन्
Especially the Purāṇic reciters, devoted to good conduct and purity.
विभवे सति देवस्य प्रीणनं कुरु चक्रिणः
When there is wealth, perform the pleasing of the god with the discus.
नरा न सीदन्ति बले समाश्रिता विभुं जगन्नाथमनन्तमच्युतम्
Men do not falter in strength, having taken refuge in the Lord, the master of the universe, the infinite, the unwavering.
संपूजितस्तेन विमुक्तिमाययौ संपूर्णकामो हरिपादभक्तः
Having been worshipped by him, the devotee of Hari's feet attained liberation and fulfillment of desire.
महेन्द्रशिल्पिप्रवरो ऽथ केशवं स कारयामास महामहीयान्
Then the foremost among Mahendra's sculptors made the great Keśava.
क्रिया महात्मा यवशर्कराद्यां बलिं चकाराप्रतिमां मधुद्रुहः
The noble one performed the unparalleled offering of barley, sugar, and other items to Madhudruha.
गेयं स धर्म्यश्रवणं च धीमान् पौराणिकैर्विप्रवरैरकारयत्
He, wise, caused the singing and the hearing of righteous stories by the eminent Purāṇic brahmins.
जगत्पतिर्दिव्यवपुर्जनार्दनस्तस्थौ महात्मा बलिरक्षणाय
Janārdana, lord of the world, with divine form, stood for the protection of Bali, the great-souled.
द्वारि स्थितो न प्रददौ प्रवेशं प्राकारगुप्ते बलिनो गृहे तु
Standing at the door, he did not grant entry into Bali's house, which was guarded by walls.
प्रासादमध्ये हरिमीशितारमभ्यर्चयामास सुरर्षिमुख्यम्
In the midst of the palace, he worshipped Hari, the ruler, and the foremost among divine sages.
सस्मार नित्यं हरिभषितानि स तस्य जातो विनयाङ्कुशस्तु
He constantly remembered the words spoken by Hari, and thus the goad of humility was born within him.
तथ्यानि पथ्यानि परत्र चेह पितामहस्येन्द्रसमस्य वीरः
The hero, equal to Indra and the grandsire, held as true and beneficial those teachings, both for this world and the next.
स्निग्धानि पश्चान्नवनीतशुद्धा मोदन्ति ते नात्र विचारमस्ति
Later, those gentle words, pure as fresh butter and food, bring delight—of this there is no doubt.
वृद्धवाक्यैषधा नूनं कुर्वन्ति किल निर्विषम्
Indeed, by following the words of the elders, they certainly act without harm.
या तृप्तिर्जायते पुंसा सोमपाने कुतस्तथा
What satisfaction arises for a man from drinking soma—where is there such elsewhere?
ते शोच्या बनधूनां जीवन्तो ऽपीह मृततुल्याः
Those among women who are not freed are to be pitied; though living here, they are as if dead.
येषां मोक्ष्यितारे वै तेषां सान्तिर्न विद्यते
For those who have no liberator, there is truly no peace.
वृद्धवाक्यैर्विना नूनं नैवोत्तारं कथञ्चन
Without the words of the elders, there is certainly no deliverance at all.
स सद्यः सिद्धिमाप्नोति यथा वैरोचनो बलिः
He attains success immediately, just as Bali, the son of Virocana, did.
श्रुत्वा च कीर्त्या परया समेतो भक्त्या च विष्णोः पदमभ्युपैति
Hearing with devotion and joined by supreme praise, one attains the abode of Viṣṇu.
तथा पुराणश्रवणाद् दुरितानां विनाशनम्
Likewise, by listening to the Purāṇas, the destruction of sins occurs.
शरीरे च कुले ब्रह्मन् यः श्रुणोति च वामनम्
O Brahman, in whose body and family one hears of Vāmana—
स चाश्वमेधस्य सदक्षिणस्य फलं समग्रं परिहिनपापः
He obtains the complete fruit of an Aśvamedha sacrifice with proper gifts, freed from all sin.
कोकामुखे यत् प्रवदन्ति विप्राः प्रयागमासाद्य च माघमासे
What the Brāhmaṇas declare at the mouth of the Ganges, having reached Prayāga in the month of Māgha—
गच्छेन्मया नारद ते ऽद्य चोक्तं यद् राजसूयस्य फलं प्रयच्छेत्
That fruit of the Rājasūya sacrifice, which I have told you today, O Nārada, one obtains by going there.
प्रापनोति चास्य श्रवणान्महर्षे सौत्रामणेर्नास्ति च संशयो मे
And by hearing this, O great sage, one attains that; of this I have no doubt regarding the Sautrāmaṇi.
अन्नस्य दानेन फलं यथोक्तं बुभुक्षिते विप्रवरे च साग्निके
The fruit declared for giving food, as said, to a hungry, excellent Brāhmaṇa with fire—
यत्तत्फलं संप्रवदन्ति देवाः स तत् फलं लभते चास्य पाठात्
That fruit which the gods declare, he obtains from reciting this.
