स्वर्गे सहस्रं स तु योजनानां विष्णोः प्रमाणेन हि वामनो ऽभूत् तत्रास्य शक्रः प्रचकार पूजां स्वयंभुवस्तुल्यगुणां महर्षे
In heaven, Vāmana became, by Viṣṇu’s measure, a thousand yojanas tall; there Indra performed worship for him, O great sage, with qualities equal to the self-born.
रसातलस्थो दितिजश्चकार यत्तच्छृणुष्वाद्य वदामि विप्र
Now hear, O brāhmaṇa, what the Dānava dwelling in the netherworld did—I shall tell you.
शुद्धस्फटिसोपानं कारयामास वै पुरम्
He caused a city to be built with stairways of pure crystal.
मुक्ताजालान्तरद्वारो निर्मितो विश्वकर्मणा
Its inner gateways of pearl latticework were fashioned by Viśvakarman.
तया सह महातेजा रेमे वैरोचनिर्मुने
With her, the radiant Vairocani enjoyed himself, O sage.
दैत्यतेजोहरः प्राप्तः चपाताले वै सुदर्शनः
Sudarsana, destroyer of the Daityas’ power, arrived in Pātāla.
बभै हलहलाशब्दः क्षुभितार्णवसंनिभः
A roaring sound arose, like the tumult of an agitated ocean.
आः किमेतदितीत्थञ्च पप्रच्छासुरपुङ्गवः
Ah! What is this?—so spoke the foremost of the Asuras, questioning thus.
कोशे खङ्गं समावेश्य धर्मपत्नी शुचिव्रता
His virtuous wife, steadfast in purity, placed a sword in the coffer.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा चार्वङ्गी सार्घपात्रा विनिर्ययौ
Having spoken thus, the lovely-limbed woman went out with the sacrificial vessel.
संपूज्य विधिवच्चक्रमिदं स्तोत्रमुदीरयत्
After duly worshipping, she recited this hymn.
सहस्रांशुं सहस्राभं सहस्रारं सुनिर्मलम्
To the thousand-rayed, thousand-brilliant, thousand-spoked, supremely pure one—
तुण्डे त्रिशूलधृक् शर्व आरामूले महाद्रयः
Who bears a trident in his mouth, Śarva, at the root of the grove, the great mountain—
जवे यस्य स्थितो वायुरापोग्निः पृथिवी नभः
In whose speed abide wind, water, fire, earth, and sky—
बाह्मतो मुनयो यस्य बालखिल्यादयस्तथा
From whom sages arise, as do the Bālakhilyas and others—
यन्मे पापं शरीरोत्थं वाग्जं मानसमेव च
Whatever sin is mine, arising from body, speech, or mind—
यन्मे कुलोद्भवं पापं पैतृकं मातृकं तथा
Whatever sin is mine, ancestral, maternal, or from my lineage—
त्वन्नामकीर्तनाच् चक्र दुरितं यातु संक्षयम्
By the chanting of your name, O Cakra, may all that evil be destroyed.
संस्मरन् पुण्डरीकाक्षं सर्वपापप्रणासनम्
Remembering Puṇḍarīkākṣa, the destroyer of all sins—
निश्चक्रामाथ पातालाद् विषुवे दक्षिमे मुने
Then he emerged from the netherworld at the southern solstice, O sage.
परमामापदं प्राप्य सस्मार स्वपितामहम्
Having reached the utmost distress, he remembered his grandsire.
दृष्ट्वा तस्थौ महातेजाः सार्घपात्रो बलिस्तदा
Seeing him, the mighty and radiant Bali stood with the sacrificial vessel.
तरणे यो भवेत् पोतस्तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि
You should explain to me that which serves as a boat for crossing the sun.
विचिन्त्य प्राह वचनं संसारे यद्वितं परम्
Reflecting, he spoke these words: 'That which is supreme knowledge in the world—'
प्रवक्ष्यामि हितं ते ऽद्य तथानेयेषां हितं बले
Today I shall tell you what is beneficial for you, and likewise what is beneficial for these others, O Bali.
विषमविषयतोये मज्जतामप्लावानां भवति शरणमेको विष्णुपोतो नराणाम्
For those who are drowning, without support, in the perilous waters of sense-objects, the single refuge for people is the boat of Viṣṇu.
परिहर मधुसूदनप्रन्नान् प्रभुरहमन्यनृणां न वैष्णवानाम्
Avoid those who are devoted to Madhusūdana; I am the lord over other men, but not over the Vaiṣṇavas.
ये विष्णुभक्ताः पुरुषाः पृथिव्यां यमस्य ते निर्विषया भवन्ति
Those men on earth who are devotees of Viṣṇu become beyond the reach of Yama.
तावेव केवलं शलाघ्यौ यौ तत्पूजाकरौ करौ
Only those two hands are truly praiseworthy which perform the worship of Him.
न यौ पूजितुं शक्तौ हरिपादाम्बुजद्वयम्
Those two hands which are unable to worship the twin lotus feet of Hari are not so.
