उच्चैः प्रोवाच केनेयं कूपोपरि शिला कृता
She loudly asked, 'By whom was this stone placed over the well?'
प्राह प्रदत्ता पित्रा मे कूपोपरि शिला त्वियम्
He replied, 'This stone was placed by my father above the well.'
सो ऽप्याह तव पुत्रो ऽस्मि निशाकरेति विश्रुतः
He also said, 'I am your son, known as Niśākara.'
निशाकरेति नाम्नाहो न कश्चित् तनयो ऽस्ति मे
She said, 'By the name Niśākara, I have no son at all.'
सा श्रुत्वा तां शिलांसुभ्रः समुत्क्षिप्यान्तयो ऽश्रिपत्
Hearing this, she lifted that shining stone, and tears fell from her eyes.
सा स्वानुरूपं तनयं दृष्ट्वा स्वसुतस्य च
She saw her own son, matching her, and also her child.
कथयामास तत्सर्वं चेष्टितं स्वसुतस्य च
She narrated everything, including the actions of her own son.
नोक्तवान् यद्भवान् पूर्वं महत्कौतूहलं मम
What you did not say before caused me great curiosity.
प्राह पुत्रो ऽद्भुतं वाक्यं मातरं पितरं तथा
The son spoke a wondrous statement to his mother and father.
मया जडत्वमनघ तथान्धत्वं स्वचक्षुषः
By me, O faultless one, dullness and blindness of my own eyes occurred thus.
वृषाकपेश्च तनयो मालागर्भसमुद्भवः
And Vṛṣākapi's son was born from the womb of Mālā.
मोक्षशास्त्रं परं तात सेतिहासश्रुतिं तथा
O dear one, the supreme scripture of liberation, along with history and tradition, was also present.
जातो मदान्धस्तेनाहं दुष्कर्माभिरतो ऽभवम्
Born blinded by intoxication, I became engaged in wicked deeds.
विवेको नाशमगमत् मूर्खभावमुपागतः
Discernment did not arise; I fell into the state of foolishness.
परदारपरार्थेषु मतिर्मे च सदाभवत्
My mind was always set on the wives and possessions of others.
मृतो ऽस्म्युद्ब्न्धनेनाहं नरकं रौरवं गतः
I died, bound by my actions, and went to the hell called Raurava.
अरण्ये मृगहा पापः संजातो ऽहं मृगाधिपः
In the forest, I became a sinful deer-killer, the chief among deer.
नराधिपेन विभुना नीतश्च नगरं निजम्
I was taken to his own city by the king, the lord.
धर्मार्थकामशास्त्राणि प्रत्यभासन्त सर्वशः
The scriptures of righteousness, wealth, and desire appeared to me in every way.
एकवस्त्रपरीधानो नगरान्निर्ययौ बहिः
Wearing only a single garment, he went out from the city.
सा निर्गते तु रमणे ममान्तिकमुपागता
When she had gone out, my beloved came near to me.
यथैव धर्मशास्त्राणि तथाहमवदं च ताम्
Just as in the scriptures of righteousness, so I spoke to her.
चित्तं हरसि मे भीरु कोकिला ध्वनिना यथा
You steal my heart, timid one, as the song of the cuckoo does.
कथमेवावयोर्व्याघ्र रतियोगमुपेष्यति
How, O tiger, will the union of pleasure between us take place?
द्वारमुद्घाटयस्वाद्य निर्गमिष्यामि सत्वरम्
Open the door, dear, I will go out quickly.
रात्रावुद्घाटयिष्याम ततो रंस्याव स्वेच्छया
At night, I will open it, then we will enjoy ourselves as we wish.
तस्मादुद्घाटय द्वारं मां बन्धाच्च विमोचय
Therefore, open the door and release me from bondage.
उद्घाटिते ततो द्वारे निर्गतो ऽहं बहिः श्रणात्
When the door was opened, I went out from there.
