हंसयुक्तं महाकोश्यां सर्वपापप्रणाशनम्
Drawn by swans in Mahākośa, the destroyer of all sins,
विन्घ्यशृङ्गे महाशैरिं कन्थायां मधुसूदनम्
On the peak of Vindhya, Mahāśairin; in Kanthā, Madhusūdana,
लौहदण्डे हृषीकेशं कोसलायां मनोहरम्
At Lauhadaṇḍa, Hṛṣīkeśa; in Kosala, the enchanting one,
भूधरं देवकानद्यां महोदायां कुशप्रियम्
Bhūdhara at Devakānadyā, Kuśapriya at Mahodā,
सुनेत्रं सैन्धवारण्ये शूरं शूरपुरे स्थितम्
Sunetra in the Sindhu forest, Śūra established in Śūrapura,
शङ्कुकर्णं च भीमायां भीमं शालवने विदुः
Śaṅkukarṇa at Bhīmā, and Bhīma known in Śālavana,
महेशं महिलाशैले कामरूपे शशिप्रभम्
Maheśa on Mahilāśaila, Śaśiprabha in Kāmarūpa,
उपेन्द्रं सिंहलद्वीपे शक्राह्वे कुन्दमालिनम्
Upendra on the island of Siṃhala, Kundamālin called Śakrāhva,
कालाग्निरुद्रं तत्रैव तथान्यं कृत्तिवाससम्
Kālāgnirudra there as well, and another, Kṛttivāsas,
महातले गुरो ख्यातं देवेशं छागलेश्वरम्
On Mahātala, O teacher, is renowned Deveśa, Chāgaleśvara.
सहस्राक्षं परिख्यातं मुसलाकृष्टदानवम्
The thousand-eyed one, renowned, who drew forth the club to subdue the demons.
धरातले कोकनदं मेदिन्यां चक्रपाणिनम्
On the earth, the lotus-like one; on the ground, the wielder of the discus.
महर्ल्लोके तथागस्त्यं कपिलं च जने स्थितम्
In the world of Mahar, Agastya is present, and Kapila abides among people.
ब्रह्माणं ब्रह्मलोके च सप्तमे वै प्रतिष्ठितम्
Brahmā is established in Brahmaloka, the seventh realm.
अप्रतर्क्यं निरालम्बे निराकाशे तपोमयम्
That which is inconceivable, unsupported, spaceless, and full of austerity.
प्लक्षद्विपे मुनिश्रेष्ठ ख्यातं गरुडवाहनम्
On Plaksha Island, O best of sages, is famed the one who rides Garuda.
सहस्रांशुः स्थितः शाके धर्मराट् पुष्करे स्थितः
The thousand-rayed one stands in Shāka, and the king of Dharma is established in Pushkara.
सजलस्थलपर्यन्तं चरेषु स्तावरेषु च
From the moist earth to the farthest lands, among the moving and unmoving beings.
धर्मप्रदानीह महौजसानि संकीर्तनीयन्यघनाशनानि
Here, the bestowers of righteousness, of great energy, are to be praised, destroyers of clouds and eaters of oblations.
धर्मार्थकामाद्यपवर्गमेव लभन्ति देवा मनुजाः ससाध्याः
Gods, humans, and Sādhyas attain righteousness, wealth, desire, and finally liberation.
उत्तिष्ठ गच्छामि महासुरस्य यज्ञं सुराणां हि हिताय विप्र
Arise, I go to the great asura's sacrifice, for the welfare of the gods, O brāhmaṇa.
विलासलीलागमनो गिरीन्द्रात् स चाभ्यगच्छत् कुरुजाङ्गलं हि
He departed playfully from the lord of mountains and reached the Kurujāngala.
क्षुब्धाः समुद्रा दिवि ऋक्षमण्डलो बभौ विपर्यस्तगतिर्महर्षे
The oceans were agitated; in the sky, the circle of stars shone, their courses disturbed, O great sage.
यथा प्रदग्धो ऽस्मि महेश्वरेण किं मां न संधक्ष्ययति वासुदेवः
Just as I was burned by Maheśvara, why does Vāsudeva not burn me as well?
भक्त्या द्विजेन्द्ररपि संप्रपादितान् नैव प्रतीच्चन्ति विभोर्भयेन
Even those offered with devotion by the best of twice-born are not accepted by the Lord, out of fear.
पप्रच्छोशनसं शुक्रं प्रणिपत्य कृताञ्जलिः
He approached Śukra, son of Uśanas, bowed with joined palms, and questioned him.
किमासुरीयान् सुहुतानपीह भागान् न गृह्णन्ति हुताशनाश्च
Why do the fires here not accept the offerings, even when the Asuric shares are well offered?
दिशः किमर्थं तमसा परिप्लुता दोषेण कस्याद्य वदस्व मे गुरो
Why are the directions enveloped in darkness? Tell me today, O teacher, whose fault is this?
अथ ज्ञात्वा कारणं च बलिं वचनमब्रवीत्
Then, understanding the reason, Bali spoke these words.
हुताशना मन्त्रहुतानपीह नूनं समागच्छति वासुदेवः
Surely, where oblations are offered with mantras into the fire, there Vāsudeva himself comes together.
