अभवत् त्वथ देवेशस्ताभ्यां चैव प्रपूजितः
Then, the Lord of the gods was duly worshipped by both of them.
संस्मरिष्यन्ति मनुजाः प्रयताः स्थिरबुद्धयः
People who are devoted and steadfast in mind will remember this.
दुःस्वप्नो नश्यते तेषां सुस्वप्नश्च भविष्यति
For them, bad dreams are destroyed and good dreams will arise.
नारसिंहं च नागेन्द्रं सृष्टिप्रलयकारकम्
Also Nārasiṃha and the king of serpents, who bring about creation and dissolution.
सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यन्ते पुण्यं लोकमवाप्नुयुः
They are freed from all sins and attain the world of merit.
स्पर्शयामास हस्तेन गजं गन्धर्वमेव च
He touched the elephant and also the Gandharva with his hand.
जगाम शरणं विप्र नारायणपरायमः
He took refuge in the Brahmin, wholly devoted to Nārāyaṇa.
पापबनधाच्च शापाच्च ग्राहं चाद्भुतकर्मकृत्
Because of the bondage of sin and the curse, he performed the wondrous deed of seizing.
गतः स भगवान् विष्णुर्दुर्विज्ञेयगतिः प्रभुः
That blessed Lord Viṣṇu, whose ways are unfathomable, departed.
ववन्दिरे महात्मानं प्रभुं नारायणं हरिम्
They bowed to the great-souled Lord, Nārāyaṇa, Hari.
विस्मयोत्फूल्लनयनाः संस्तुवन्ति जनार्दनम्
With eyes wide in astonishment, they praised Janārdana.
गजेन्द्रमोक्षणं दृष्ट्वा इदं वचनमब्रवीत्
Having seen the liberation of the elephant-king, he spoke these words.
प्राप्नुयात् परमां सिद्धिं दुःस्वप्नस्तस्य नश्यति
He attains the highest perfection; his evil dreams are destroyed.
गजेन्द्रमोक्षणेनेह सद्यः पापात् प्रमुच्यते
By the liberation of the elephant here, one is instantly freed from sin.
यस्मिन् किलोक्ते बहुपापबन्धनात् लभ्येत मोक्षो द्विरदेन यद्वत्
By reciting this, indeed, one is released from many bonds of sin, just as the elephant obtained liberation.
तं देवगुह्यं पुरुषं पुराणं वन्दाम्यहं लोकपतिं वरेण्यम्
I bow to that divine, secret, ancient Person, the lord of the worlds, the most excellent.
यं कीर्त्य संश्रुत्य तथा विचिन्त्य पापापनोदं पुरुषो लभेत
By praising, hearing, and contemplating him, a person obtains the dispelling of sin.
परपीडारुचिः क्षुद्रः स्वभावादपि निर्घृणः
He delighted in harming others, was base, and by nature merciless.
स त्वायुषि परिक्षिणे जज्ञे घोरो निशाचरः
When his life was nearly spent, a terrible night-wanderer was born.
क्रुरैश्चक्रे ततो वृत्तिं राक्षसत्वाद् विशेषतः
He made his living by cruel deeds, especially due to his demonic nature.
तेनैव कर्मदोषेण नान्यां वृत्तिमरोचयत्
Because of that very fault in his actions, he did not choose any other livelihood.
चखाद रौद्रकर्मासौ बाहुगोचरमागतम्
He devoured, with fierce deeds, whatever came within the reach of his arms.
जगाम च महान् कालः परिणामं तथा वयः
And a great span of time passed, and likewise age advanced.
महाभागमूर्ध्वभुजं यथावत्संयतेन्द्रियम्
He was most noble, with arms raised upward, always self-controlled in his senses.
योगाचार्यं शुचिं दक्षं वासुदेवपरायणम्
A master of yoga, pure, skillful, wholly devoted to Vāsudeva.
प्रतीच्यां शार्ङ्गधृग्विष्णुर्विष्णुः खड्गी ममोत्तरे
In the west, Viṣṇu, bearer of the bow Śārṅga, stands armed with a sword at my north.
क्रोडरूपी हरिर्भूमौ नारसिंहो ऽम्बरे मम
Hari, in the form of a boar, is on the earth; Nṛsiṃha is in the sky for me.
अस्यांशुमाला दुष्प्रेक्ष्या हन्तुं प्रेतनिशाचरान्
This garland of rays, hard to behold, is for the destruction of ghosts and night-wandering spirits.
रक्षोभूतपिशाचानां डाकिनीनां च शातनी
The destroyer of demons, spirits, fiends, and ḍākinīs.
तिर्यङ्मनुष्यकूष्माण्डप्रेतादीन् हन्त्वशेषतः
Let it utterly destroy beasts, men, kūṣmāṇḍas, ghosts, and the rest.
