वदन्ति यं वै पुरुषं सनातनं तं देवगुह्यं शरणं प्रपद्ये
I take refuge in that secret of the gods, whom they call the eternal person.
तमीश्वरं तृप्तमनुत्तमैर्गुणैः परायणं विष्णुमुपैमि साश्वतम्
I approach that eternal Viṣṇu, the lord, satisfied with unsurpassed virtues, the supreme refuge.
महाबलं वेदनिधिं सुरेशं व३जामि विष्णुं शरणं जनार्दनम्
I seek refuge in Viṣṇu, Janārdana, of great strength, the treasure of the Vedas, the lord of the gods.
पीताम्बरं काञ्चनभक्तिचित्रं मालाधरं केशवमभ्युपैमि
I approach Keśava, clad in yellow garments, adorned with a garland, resplendent with golden brilliance.
आदित्यरुद्राश्विवसुप्रभावं प्रभुं प्रपद्ये ऽच्युतमात्मवन्तम्
I take refuge in Acyuta, the self-possessed lord, whose power is that of the Ādityas, Rudras, Aśvins, and Vasus.
प्रपद्ये सूक्ष्ममचलं वरेण्यमभयप्रदम्
I take refuge in the subtle, immovable, most excellent one, the giver of fearlessness.
प्रपद्ये मुक्तसंगानां यतीनां परमां गतिम्
I seek refuge in the supreme state attained by ascetics who are free from attachment.
शरण्यं शरणं भक्त्या प्रपद्ये भक्तवत्सलम्
I take refuge, with devotion, in the protector of devotees, who is the shelter for those seeking protection.
योगात्मानं महात्मानं प्रपद्ये ऽहं जनार्दनम्
I surrender to Janārdana, the soul of yoga, the great soul.
नारायणमणीयांसं प्रपद्ये ब्राह्मणप्रियम्
I take refuge in Nārāyaṇa, subtler than the subtle, who is dear to the brāhmaṇas.
प्रपद्ये देवदेवेशमणीयांसमणोः सदा
I ever take refuge in the Lord of gods, subtler than the subtle.
नमः सहस्रशिरसे अनन्ताय महात्मने
Homage to the thousand-headed, infinite, great soul.
कीर्तयन्ति च यं सर्वे ब्रह्मादीनां परायणम्
All praise him, who is the supreme goal of Brahmā and the others.
सुब्रह्मण्य नमस्ते ऽस्तु त्राहि मां शरणागतम्
O Subrahmaṇya, salutations to you; protect me, who has sought your refuge.
प्रीतिमानभवद् विष्णुः शङ्खचक्रगदाधरः
Viṣṇu, bearer of the conch, discus, and mace, became pleased.
गरुडस्थो जगत्स्वामी लोकाधारस्तपोधनः
The Lord of the universe, seated on Garuḍa, the support of the worlds, rich in austerity,
उज्जहाराप्रमेयात्मा तरसा मधुसूदनः
The immeasurable soul, Madhusūdana, swiftly lifted him up.
मोक्षयामास नागेन्द्रं पाशेभ्यः शरणागतम्
He freed the king of serpents, who had sought refuge, from the bonds.
ग्राहत्वमगमत् कृष्णाद् वधं प्राप्य दिवं गतः
Having been slain by Kṛṣṇa, the crocodile attained heaven.
आपद्विक्तौ युगपद् गजगन्धर्वसत्तमौ
At that moment of peril, the best of elephants and gandharvas together,
अभवत् त्वथ देवेशस्ताभ्यां चैव प्रपूजितः
Then, the Lord of the gods was duly worshipped by both of them.
संस्मरिष्यन्ति मनुजाः प्रयताः स्थिरबुद्धयः
People who are devoted and steadfast in mind will remember this.
दुःस्वप्नो नश्यते तेषां सुस्वप्नश्च भविष्यति
For them, bad dreams are destroyed and good dreams will arise.
नारसिंहं च नागेन्द्रं सृष्टिप्रलयकारकम्
Also Nārasiṃha and the king of serpents, who bring about creation and dissolution.
सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यन्ते पुण्यं लोकमवाप्नुयुः
They are freed from all sins and attain the world of merit.
स्पर्शयामास हस्तेन गजं गन्धर्वमेव च
He touched the elephant and also the Gandharva with his hand.
जगाम शरणं विप्र नारायणपरायमः
He took refuge in the Brahmin, wholly devoted to Nārāyaṇa.
पापबनधाच्च शापाच्च ग्राहं चाद्भुतकर्मकृत्
Because of the bondage of sin and the curse, he performed the wondrous deed of seizing.
गतः स भगवान् विष्णुर्दुर्विज्ञेयगतिः प्रभुः
That blessed Lord Viṣṇu, whose ways are unfathomable, departed.
ववन्दिरे महात्मानं प्रभुं नारायणं हरिम्
They bowed to the great-souled Lord, Nārāyaṇa, Hari.
