को ऽयं विरूपाक्ष इति त्वयाराध्यस्तु कीर्तितः
Who is this Virupaksha, whom you say should be worshipped?
यो ऽयं विरुपाक्ष इति श्रूयतां कथयामि ते
This Virupaksha—listen, I will tell you about him.
तेनाक्रम्य जगत्सर्वं श्रीर्नीता स्ववशं पुरा
By him, in ancient times, all the worlds were subdued and Sri was brought under his control.
श्रीवत्सं वासुदेवस्य हर्तुमैच्छन्महाबलः
The mighty one wished to seize the Srivatsa mark of Vasudeva.
ज्ञात्वा तस्य वधाकाङ्क्षी महेश्वरमुपागमत्
Knowing this, desiring his destruction, he approached Maheshvara.
तस्थौ हिमाचलप्रस्थमाश्रित्य श्लुक्ष्णभूतलम्
He stood upon the plateau of the Himalayas, on the dry ground.
आराधयामास हरिः स्वयमात्मानमात्मना
Hari himself worshipped the Supreme Self with his own self.
गृणंस्तत्परमं ब्रह्म योगिज्ञेयमलक्षणम्
He praised that Supreme Brahman, knowable by yogis, without attributes.
प्रत्यक्षं तैजसं श्रीमान् दिव्यं चक्रं सुदर्शनम्
The glorious, divine Sudarshana discus, blazing and visible, appeared.
कालचक्रनिभं चक्रं शङ्करो विष्णुमब्रवीत्
Shankara said to Vishnu: 'This discus, resembling the wheel of time...'
सुदर्शनो द्वादशारः षण्णाभिर्द्वियुगो जवी
'The Sudarshana has twelve spokes, six naves, and moves swiftly in pairs.'
शिष्टानां रक्षणार्थाय संस्थिता ऋथवश्च षट्
'For the protection of the virtuous, the six seasons are also established.'
इन्द्राग्नी चाप्यथो विश्वे प्रजापतय एव च
Indra and Agni, as well as all the Visvedevas and the Prajapatis, are also present there.
चैत्राद्याः फाल्गुनान्ताश्च मासास्तत्र प्रतिष्ठताः
The months beginning with Caitra and ending with Phalguna are established there.
अमोघ एषो ऽमरराजडपूजितो धृतो मया नेत्रगतस्तपोबलात्
This unfailing one, worshipped by the king of immortals, has been held by me, placed in my eye through the power of austerity.
कथं शंभो विजानीयाममोघो मोघ एव वा
How, O Shambhu, shall I know whether it is unfailing or failing?
जिज्ञासार्थं तवैवेह प्रक्षेप्स्यामि प्रतीच्छ भोः
For the sake of your inquiry, I will cast it here; accept it, O sir.
यद्येवं प्रक्षिपस्वेति निर्विशङ्केन चेतसा
If so, then cast it with a mind free from doubt.
मुमोच तेजोजिज्ञासुः शङ्करं प्रति वेगवान्
Desiring to know, he released the energy swiftly towards Shankara.
त्रिधा चकार विश्वेशं यज्ञेशं यज्ञयाजकम्
He made the Lord of all, the Lord of sacrifice, and the performer of sacrifice into three forms.
व्रीडोपप्लुतदेहस्तु प्रणिपातपरो ऽभवत्
His body, overwhelmed by shame, became devoted to prostration.
निकृत्तो न स्वरभावो मे सो ऽच्छेद्यो ऽदाह्य एव च
Though cut, my essential nature is not destroyed; it cannot be severed or burned.
कृतानि तानि पुण्यनि भविष्यन्ति न सशयः
Those virtuous deeds which have been performed will surely bear fruit, without doubt.
तृतीयश्च विरूपाक्षस्त्रयो ऽमी पुण्यदा नृणाम्
The third is Virupaksha; these three grant merit to men.
श्रीदाम्नि निहते विष्णो नन्दयिष्यन्ति देवताः
When Shri Damni is slain by Vishnu, the gods will rejoice.
गत्वा सुरगिरिप्रस्थं श्रीदामानं ददर्श ह
Having gone to the summit of the divine mountain, he saw Shri Damna.
मुमोच चक्रं वेगाढ्यं हतो ऽसीति ब्रुवन्मुहुः
He released the discus with great speed, repeatedly declaring, 'He is slain.'
संछिन्नसीर्षो निपपात शैलाद् वज्राहतं शैलशिरो यथैव
His head severed, he fell from the mountain like a mountain peak struck by a thunderbolt.
लब्ध्वा च चक्रं प्रवरं महायुधं जगाम देवो निलयं पयोनिधिम्
Having obtained the excellent discus, the great weapon, the god went to his abode in the ocean.
तमाराधय चेत् साधो क्षीरेणोच्छसि भोजनम्
If you worship him, O virtuous one, you will obtain food with milk.
