शूलबाहुं च गोविन्दं ददर्श दनुपुङ्गवः
The foremost of Dānavas saw Śūlabāhu and Govinda.
शूलं तथा वासुदेवो ममैतद् ब्रूहि पृच्छतः
Vāsudeva also (showed) the trident; tell me about this, as you ask.
कथयामास यां विष्णुर्भविष्यमनवे पुरा
He narrated that which Viṣṇu had formerly told to the future Manu.
आराधयामास विरञ्चिमारात् स तस्य तुष्टो वरदो बभूव
He worshipped Virañci from nearby, and, being pleased, he granted him a boon.
ब्रह्मर्षिशापैश्च निरीप्सितार्थो जले च वह्नौ स्वगुणोपहर्त्ता
By the curses of the Brahmarṣis, his desired object was lost, and in water and fire he was deprived of his own qualities.
आबाधमानो विचचार भूम्यां सर्वाः क्रिया नाशयदुग्रमूर्तिः
Afflicted, he wandered over the earth, and the fierce one destroyed all rites.
तैश्चापि सार्द्ध भगवाञ्जगाम हिमालयं यत्र हरस्त्रिनेत्रः
Together with them, the Blessed Lord went to the Himalayas, where Shiva, the three-eyed one, resides.
निजायुधानां च विपर्ययं तौ देवाधिपौ चक्रतुरुग्रकर्मिणौ
Those two mighty lords of the gods, fierce in their deeds, exchanged their own weapons.
मत्वाजेयौ शत्रुभिर्घोररुपौ भयास्तोये निम्नगायां विवेश
Thinking them invincible by enemies and terrible in form, he entered the river, fearful as if into a flood.
द्वयोः सशस्त्रौ तटयोर्हरीशौ प्रच्छन्नमूर्ती सहसा बभूवतुः
On the two banks, the lords of the monkeys, armed, suddenly assumed hidden forms.
दिशस्समीक्ष्य भयकातराक्षो दुर्गं हिमाद्रिं च तदारुरोह
Glancing in all directions, terrified by fear, he then climbed the fortress of the Himalaya.
वेगादुभौ दुदुवतुः सशस्त्रौ विष्णुस्त्रिशूली गिरिशश्च चक्री
Both, armed, rushed swiftly—Vishnu with the trident, and the mountain lord with the discus.
पपात शैलात् तपनीयवर्णो यथान्तरिक्षाद् विमला च तारा
He fell from the mountain, golden in hue, like a pure star from the sky.
यत्राघहन्त्री ह्यभवद् वितस्ता हराङ्घ्रिपाताच्छिशिराचलात्तु
There, from the fall of Hara’s foot on the cool mountain, the river Vitasta, destroyer of sin, arose.
उपोष्य भक्त्या हिमवन्तमागाद् द्रष्टुं गिरीशं शिवविष्णुगुप्तम्
Having fasted with devotion, he went to Himavat to see the mountain lord, Shiva, concealed with Vishnu.
विस्तुते हिमवत्पादे भृगुतुङ्गं जगाम सः
At the foot of the praised Himavat, he went to lofty Bhrigu.
येन प्रचिच्छेद त्रिधैव शङ्करं जिज्ञासमानो ऽस्त्रबलं महात्मा
There, the great soul, wishing to test the power of weapons, cut Shankara into three parts.
किमर्थमायुधं चक्रं दत्तवांल्लोकपूजितम्
For what purpose was the discus, revered by the worlds, given as a weapon?
चक्रप्रदानसंबद्धां शिवमाहात्मयवर्धिनीम्
Connected with the giving of the discus is the story that increases the greatness of Shiva.
गृहाश्रमी महाभागो वीतमन्युरिति स्मृतः
The blessed householder, free from anger, is remembered as such.
पतिव्रता पतिप्राणा धर्मशीलेति विश्रुता
She is renowned as devoted to her husband, her husband her very life, and righteous in conduct.
संबभूव सुतः श्रीमान् उपमन्युरिति समृतः
A glorious son was born, known as Upamanyu.
पोषयामास वदती क्षीरमेतत् सुदुर्गता
Though in great distress, the lady nourished him with what milk there was.
संभावनामप्यकरोच्छालिपिष्टरसे ऽपि हि
She even made him a dish with the juice of ground rice, as a mark of her regard.
क्षीरौदनं च बुभुजे सुस्वादु प्राणपुष्टिदम्
He ate the rice cooked in milk, which was very delicious and nourishing to the life-breath.
मात्रा दत्तं द्वितीये ऽह्नि नादत्ते पिष्टवारि तत्
On the second day, he did not accept the flour-gruel given by his mother.
तं माता रुदती प्राह बाष्पगद्गदया गिरा
His mother, weeping, spoke to him with a voice choked by tears.
अप्रसन्ने विरुपाक्षे कुतः क्षीरेण भोजनम्
When Virupaksha is displeased, how can there be food with milk?
तदाराधय देवेशं विरूपाक्षं त्रिशूलिनम्
Therefore, worship the Lord of the gods, Virupaksha, the wielder of the trident.
प्राप्यते ऽमृतपायित्वं किं पुनः क्षीरभोजनम्
By pleasing him, one attains the drinking of nectar—how much more so the eating of milk-rice!
