फलोपगानि वृक्षाणि संभूतानि सहस्रशः
Fruit-bearing trees came into being by the thousands.
हरप्रसादाज्जातानि भोज्यान्यपि सुरोत्तमैः
By the grace of Hara, foods fit for the best of gods were produced.
पुष्यार्था शिशिराद्रिं स जगाम तपसे ऽव्ययः
For the sake of flowers, the imperishable one went to Mount Śiśira for austerities.
ततस्त्वनङ्गेति महाधनुर्द्धरो देवैस्तु गीतः सुरपूर्वपूजितः
Then, praised by the gods and worshipped by the foremost of celestials, he took up the great bow called Anaṅga.
प्रहस्यैवं वचः प्राह कन्दर्व इह आस्यताम्
Smiling, the Gandharva spoke these words: 'Sit here.'
वसन्तो ऽपि महाचिन्तां जगामाशु महामुने
Even Vasanta quickly fell into deep anxiety, O great sage.
वसन्तमाह भगवानेह्येहि स्थीयतामिति
The blessed one said to Vasanta, 'Come here, stay.'
आदाय प्राक्सुवर्णाङ्गीमूर्वोर्बालां विनिर्ममे
He took a maiden with golden limbs from his thigh and created her.
अमन्यत तदानङ्गः किमियं सा प्रिया रतिः
Then Kāmadeva wondered, 'Who is she? Is this my beloved Rati?'
सुनासावंशाधरोष्ठमालोकनपरायणम्
She had a fine nose, a line of lips, and was intent on gazing.
राजेते ऽस्यः कुचौ पीनौ सज्जनावि संहतौ
Her full breasts shine, closely set together like the meeting of noble friends.
उदरं राजते श्लक्ष्णं रोमावलिविभूषितम्
Her smooth abdomen shines, adorned with a line of fine hair.
राजते भृङ्गमालेव पुलिनात् कमलाकरम्
She shines like a swarm of bees moving from the riverbank to a lotus pond.
श्रीरोदमथने नद्धूं भूजङ्गेनेव मन्दरम्
As if, in the churning of the ocean of fortune, Mandara was bound by a serpent.
विभाति सा सुचार्वङ्गी पद्मकिढ्जल्कसन्निभा
She, with her beautiful form, shines like the filament of a lotus.
विभातो ऽस्यास्तथा पादावलक्तकसमत्विषौ
Her feet shine likewise, radiant as if painted with red lac.
कामातुरो ऽसौ संजातः किमुतान्यो जनो मुने
He is overcome with desire—how could anyone else, O sage?
किंस्वित् कामनरेन्द्रस्य राजधानी स्वयं स्थिता
Is this, perhaps, the very capital city of the lord of desire established here?
रविरश्मिप्रतापार्तिभीता शरणमागता
Frightened by the heat of the sun's rays, she has come seeking refuge.
तस्थौ मुनिरिव ध्यानमास्थितः स तु माधवः
Thereupon Mādhava stood, composed in meditation like a sage.
दृष्ट्वा प्रोवाच वचनं स्मितं कृत्वा शुभव्रतः
Seeing this, the virtuous one spoke, smiling as he did so.
नीयतां सुरलोकाय दीयतां वासवाय च
Let her be led to the world of the gods; let her be given to Vāsava.
सहस्राक्षाय तां प्रादाद् रूपयौवनशालिनीम्
He gave her, endowed with beauty and youth, to the thousand-eyed one.
देवाराजाय कामाद्यास्ततो ऽभृद् विस्मयः परः
Then, desire and others arose for the king of the gods, and he was filled with great wonder.
पातालेषु तथा मर्त्यै दिक्ष्वष्टासु जगाम च
So too in the netherworlds, among mortals, and in all eight directions, she went.
अभिषिक्तस्तदा राज्ये प्रह्लादौ नाम दानवः
At that time, a Dānava named Prahlāda was anointed king.
मखानि भुवि राजानो यजन्ते विधिवत्तदा
Then, kings on earth performed sacrifices according to proper rites.
वैश्याश्च पशुवृत्तिस्थाः शूद्राः शुश्रूषणे रताः
The Vaiśyas engaged in tending cattle, and the Śūdras delighted in service.
आवर्त्तत ततो देवा वृत्त्या युक्ताभवान् मुने
Then, O sage, the gods resumed their activities, engaged in their respective duties.
जगाम नर्मदां स्नातुं तीर्थं चैवाकुलीश्वरम्
He went to the Narmada to bathe, and also to the holy place called Akulīśvara.
