ममाविशन्महाबाहो विवेकप्रतिषेधकः
O mighty-armed one, entering me is an obstacle to discernment.
अवश्यं भाविनो ह्यर्था न विनश्यन्ति कर्हिचित्
The results destined to be will certainly never perish.
आगमे निर्गमे प्राज्ञो न विषादं समाचरेत्
In arrival and departure, the wise should not fall into despair.
सुखदुःखानि दैत्येन्द्र नरस्तानि सहेत् तथा
O king of demons, a man should endure both happiness and sorrow in this way.
संपदं च सुविस्तीर्णां प्राप्य नो ऽधृतिमान् भवेत्
Even upon attaining vast prosperity, one should not become unsteady.
धीराः कार्येषु च सदा भवन्ति पुरुषोत्तमाः
The steadfast are always supreme among men in their actions.
कर्तुमर्हसि विद्वांस्त्वं पण्डितो नावसीदति
You ought to act; the learned do not fall into despair.
भवतो ऽथ तथान्येषां श्रुत्वा तच्च समाचर
After hearing this from you and from others, act accordingly.
स ते त्राता भयादस्माद् दानवेन्द्र भविष्यति
He will be your protector from this fear, O lord of the demons.
संसारगर्तपतितस्य करावलम्बं नूनं न ते भुवि नरा ज्वरिणो भवन्ति
Surely, for those fallen into the pit of worldly existence, there is no support; men afflicted by fever do not find it on earth.
स एष भवतः श्रेयो विधास्यति जनार्धनः
Janārdana will provide you with the highest good.
विमुक्तपापश्च ततो गमिष्ये यत्राच्युतो लोकपतिर्नृसिंहः
Freed from sin, I will then go to where Acyuta, the lord of the worlds, Nṛsiṃha, resides.
आमन्त्र्य सर्वान् दनुयूथपालान् जगाम कर्तुं त्वथ तीर्थयात्राम्
After addressing all the leaders of the demon hosts, he then set out to undertake a pilgrimage to the sacred fords.
प्रह्लादतीर्थयात्रां मे सम्यगाख्यातुमर्हसि
You ought to fully recount to me the pilgrimage of Prahlāda.
प्रह्लादतीर्थयात्रां ते शुद्धपुण्यप्रदायिनीम्
The pilgrimage of Prahlāda, which bestows pure merit, is yours to tell.
ख्यातं पृतिव्यां शुभदं हि मानसं यत्र स्थितो मत्स्यवपुः सुरेशः
It is renowned on earth as auspicious: the Mānasa, where the Lord of the gods took form as a fish.
संपूज्य च जगन्नाथमच्युतं श्रुतिभिर्युतम्
And, having worshipped the Lord of the universe, Acyuta, who is accompanied by the Vedas,
जगाम कच्छपं द्रष्टुं कौशिक्यां पापनाशनम्
He went to see the Kacchapa (Tortoise) at Kauśikī, the destroyer of sins.
समुपोष्य शुचिर्भूत्वा दत्वा विप्रेषु दक्षिणाम्
After fasting and becoming pure, he gave gifts to the Brāhmaṇas.
तत्र देवह्रदे स्नात्वा तर्पयित्वा पितॄन् सुरान्
There, after bathing in the divine lake and offering oblations to the ancestors and the gods,
तत्र देवं जगन्नाथं गोविन्दं चक्रपाणिनम्
There he beheld the Lord of the universe, Govinda, wielder of the discus.
ददर्श देवदेवेशं लोकनाथं त्रिविक्रमम्
He saw the Lord of gods, the Lord of the worlds, Trivikrama.
करिष्यति जगत्स्वामी बलेर्बन्धनमीश्वरः
The Lord, master of the worlds, will bind Bali.
कस्य वा बन्धनं विष्णुः कृतवांस्तच्च मे वद
Whom did Viṣṇu bind, and for what reason? Tell me that as well.
यस्मिन् काले संबभूव यं च वञ्चितवानसौ
At what time did this occur, and whom did he deceive?
दनुगर्भसमुद्भूतो माबलपराक्रमः
Born from the womb of a demoness, he was mighty and powerful.
अवध्यत्वं सुरैः सेन्द्रैः प्रार्थयत् स तु नारद
He sought invulnerability from the gods along with Indra, O Nārada.
परितुष्टः स च बली निर्जगाम त्रिविष्टपम्
Pleased, that mighty one departed for heaven.
धुन्धुः शक्रत्वमकरोद्धिरण्यकशिपौ सति
Dhundhu attained the station of Indra while Hiraṇyakaśipu was still alive.
चचार मन्दरगिरौ दैत्यं धुन्धुं समाश्रितः
He dwelt on Mount Mandara, taking refuge with the demon Dhundhu.
