धिग्धिगित्याह स बलिं वैकुण्ठाक्षेपवादिनम्
He derided Bali, who spoke words of contempt for Vaikuṇṭha, saying 'Shame! Shame!'
हरिं निन्दयतो जिह्वा कथं न पतिता तव
How is it that your tongue has not fallen, as you revile Hari?
यत् त्रैलोक्यगुरुं विष्णुमभिनिन्दसि दुर्मते
O wicked-minded one, you reproach Viṣṇu, the teacher of the three worlds.
यस्य त्वं कर्कशः पुत्रो जातो देवावमान्यकः
You, harsh one, were born as a son who disrespects the gods.
यता नान्यः प्रियः कश्चिन्मम तस्माज्जनार्दनात्
Since there is no one else dearer to me than Janārdana,
सर्वेश्वरेश्वरं देवं कथं निन्दितवानसि
How have you spoken ill of the god who is the lord of all lords?
ममापि पूज्यो भगवान् गुरुर्लोकगुरुर्हरिः
Even for me, the blessed Lord Hari, guru of the world, is worthy of worship.
पूज्यं निन्दयसे पाप कथं न पतितो ऽस्यधः
You, sinner, revile the one worthy of worship—how is it that you have not fallen down?
येषां त्वं कर्कशो राजा वासुदेवस्य निन्दकः
You, harsh king, are a reviler of Vāsudeva among those people.
तस्मात् पापसमाचरा राज्यनाशमवाप्नुहि
Therefore, behaving sinfully, you shall meet the loss of your kingdom.
मनसा कर्मणा वाचा राज्यभ्रष्टस्तथा पत
By mind, by deed, and by word, be cast down from your kingdom.
चतुर्दशसु लोकेषु रपाज्यभ्रष्टस्तथा पत
In all the fourteen worlds, be cast down from sovereignty.
यथा तथानुपस्येयं भवन्तं राज्यविच्युतम्
So that I may see you thus, deprived of your kingdom.
अवतीर्यासनाद् ब्रह्मन् कृताञ्जलिपुटो बली
Descending from his seat, Bali, with hands joined in reverence, approached, O Brahman.
कृतापराधानपि हि क्षमन्ति गुरवः शिशून्
Even when children have committed offenses, elders forgive them.
न बिभेमि परेभ्यो ऽहं न च राज्यपरिक्षयात्
I do not fear others, nor the loss of the kingdom.
दुःखं कृतापराधत्वाद् भवतो मे महत्तरम्
Because I have committed an offense against you, my suffering is even greater.
कृते ऽपि दोषे गुरवः शिशूनां क्षमन्ति दैत्यं समुपागतानाम्
Even when faults are committed, elders forgive children, even those among the demons who approach them.
चिरं विचिन्त्याद्भुतमेतदित्थमुवाच पौत्रं मधुरं वचो ऽथ
After long reflection, marveling at this, he then spoke sweet words to his grandson.
येन सर्वगतं विष्णुं जानंस्त्वां सप्तवानहम्
By whom the all-pervading Viṣṇu is known, I am the seventh in your line.
ममाविशन्महाबाहो विवेकप्रतिषेधकः
O mighty-armed one, entering me is an obstacle to discernment.
अवश्यं भाविनो ह्यर्था न विनश्यन्ति कर्हिचित्
The results destined to be will certainly never perish.
आगमे निर्गमे प्राज्ञो न विषादं समाचरेत्
In arrival and departure, the wise should not fall into despair.
सुखदुःखानि दैत्येन्द्र नरस्तानि सहेत् तथा
O king of demons, a man should endure both happiness and sorrow in this way.
संपदं च सुविस्तीर्णां प्राप्य नो ऽधृतिमान् भवेत्
Even upon attaining vast prosperity, one should not become unsteady.
धीराः कार्येषु च सदा भवन्ति पुरुषोत्तमाः
The steadfast are always supreme among men in their actions.
कर्तुमर्हसि विद्वांस्त्वं पण्डितो नावसीदति
You ought to act; the learned do not fall into despair.
भवतो ऽथ तथान्येषां श्रुत्वा तच्च समाचर
After hearing this from you and from others, act accordingly.
स ते त्राता भयादस्माद् दानवेन्द्र भविष्यति
He will be your protector from this fear, O lord of the demons.
संसारगर्तपतितस्य करावलम्बं नूनं न ते भुवि नरा ज्वरिणो भवन्ति
Surely, for those fallen into the pit of worldly existence, there is no support; men afflicted by fever do not find it on earth.
