मां स्तुवाते भृशास्वस्थं कामतापितविग्रहम्
Those who praise me, though afflicted by desire and suffering, become truly at peace.
एतत् प्रगृह्यतां भूय अतो देव स्तुवावहे
Accept this, and again let us praise the god.
तदेतत्प्रतिगृह्णीयां नान्यथेति कथञ्चन
Let this indeed be accepted; in no way should it be otherwise.
ब्रह्म स्वयं च जग्राह लिङ्गं कनकपिङ्गलम्
Brahmā himself took up the golden, tawny liṅga.
तृतीयं कालवदनं चतुर्थं च कपालिनम्
The third was Kālavadana, and the fourth was Kapālin.
तस्य शिष्यो बभूवाथ गोपायन इति श्रुतः
His disciple then became known as Gopāyana.
तस्य शिष्यो ऽप्यभूद्राजा ऋषभः सोमकेश्वरः
His disciple was the king Ṛṣabha, called Somakeśvara.
तस्य शिष्योभवद्वैश्यो नाम्ना क्राथेश्वरो मुने
His disciple was a Vaiśya named Krātheśvara, O sage.
कर्णोदर इति ख्यातो जात्या शूद्रो महातपाः
He became known as Karṇodara, a Śūdra by birth, but a great ascetic.
कृत्वा तु चातुराश्रम्यं स्वमेव भवनं गतः
Having fulfilled the four stages of life, he went to his own abode.
आरात्स्थित्वाग्रतो धन्वी संतापयितुमुद्यतः
Standing at a distance before him, the archer prepared to torment him.
स्मरमालोकयामास शिखाग्राच्चरणान्तिकम्
He saw Smara descending from the tip of his topknot to his feet.
प्रादह्यत तदा ब्रह्मन् पादादारभ्य कक्षवत्
Then, O Brahmin, it began to burn from the feet upward, like a forest fire.
उत्ससर्ज धनुः श्रेष्ठं तज्जगामाथ पञ्चधा
He cast aside the excellent bow, and it broke into five parts.
स चम्पकतरुर्जातः सुगन्धाढ्यो गुणाकृतिः
From that, a campaka tree arose, rich in fragrance and perfect in form.
तज्जातं केसरारण्यं बकुलं नामतो मुने
From that was born the kesara forest, known as bakula, O sage.
जाता सा पाटला रम्या भृङ्गराजिविभूषिता
There arose the lovely pāṭalā, adorned with bhringarāja flowers.
पञ्चगुल्माभवज्जाती शशाङ्ककिरणोज्ज्वला
The jāti plant appeared, shining with the rays of the moon, like five clusters.
तस्माद्भुपुटा मल्ली संजाता विविधा मुने
From that heap of earth, O sage, various kinds of mallī plants arose.
जातियुक्तानि देवेन स्वयमाचरितानि च
Those endowed with jāti, and those personally fashioned by the god, also appeared.
फलोपगानि वृक्षाणि संभूतानि सहस्रशः
Fruit-bearing trees came into being by the thousands.
हरप्रसादाज्जातानि भोज्यान्यपि सुरोत्तमैः
By the grace of Hara, foods fit for the best of gods were produced.
पुष्यार्था शिशिराद्रिं स जगाम तपसे ऽव्ययः
For the sake of flowers, the imperishable one went to Mount Śiśira for austerities.
ततस्त्वनङ्गेति महाधनुर्द्धरो देवैस्तु गीतः सुरपूर्वपूजितः
Then, praised by the gods and worshipped by the foremost of celestials, he took up the great bow called Anaṅga.
प्रहस्यैवं वचः प्राह कन्दर्व इह आस्यताम्
Smiling, the Gandharva spoke these words: 'Sit here.'
वसन्तो ऽपि महाचिन्तां जगामाशु महामुने
Even Vasanta quickly fell into deep anxiety, O great sage.
वसन्तमाह भगवानेह्येहि स्थीयतामिति
The blessed one said to Vasanta, 'Come here, stay.'
आदाय प्राक्सुवर्णाङ्गीमूर्वोर्बालां विनिर्ममे
He took a maiden with golden limbs from his thigh and created her.
अमन्यत तदानङ्गः किमियं सा प्रिया रतिः
Then Kāmadeva wondered, 'Who is she? Is this my beloved Rati?'
सुनासावंशाधरोष्ठमालोकनपरायणम्
She had a fine nose, a line of lips, and was intent on gazing.
