न केवलं हि भवतो हृतं तेन बलीयसा
Not only has yours been taken by that powerful one.
भास्करो ऽपि हि दीनत्वं प्रयातो हि बलाद् बलेः
Even the sun has become weakened by the strength of Bali.
ऋते सहस्रं शिरसं हरिं दशशताङ्घ्रिकम्
Except for Hari, who has a thousand heads and ten hundred feet,
समाहरिष्यति बलेः कर्तुः सद्धर्मगोचरम्
He will gather from Bali what belongs within the domain of true righteousness.
दीनान् दृष्ट्वा स शक्रादीन् विभीतकवनं गतः
Seeing Indra and the others dejected, he went to the Vibhitaka grove.
धर्मो ऽभवच्चतुष्पादश्चातुर्वर्ण्ये ऽपि नारद
Righteousness became four-footed, even among the four castes, O Narada.
दया दानं त्वानृशंस्यं शुश्रुषा यज्ञकर्म च
Compassion, charity, kindness, service, and sacrificial acts prevailed.
बलिना बलवान् ब्रह्मन् तिष्यो ऽपि हि कृतः कृतः
By Bali, the powerful, even the strong Brahman was repeatedly subdued.
प्रजापालनधर्मस्थाः सदैव मनुजर्षभाः
The foremost among men, ever established in the protection of their people and in righteousness,
त्रैलोक्यलक्ष्मीर्वरदा त्वायाता दानवेश्वरम्
The fortune of the three worlds, bestower of boons, has now come to you, O lord of the Daityas.
पप्रच्छ कासि मां ब्रूहि केनास्यर्थेन चागता
She asked, 'Who are you? Tell me. For what purpose have you come here?'
बले शृणुष्व यास्मि त्वामायाता महिषि बलात्
O Bali, listen: I have come to you, compelled by force, as a queen.
तेन त्यक्तस्तु मघवा ततो ऽहं त्वामिहागता
Thus, Maghavan abandoned me; therefore, I have come here to you.
श्वेताम्बरधरा चैव श्वेतस्रगनुलेपना
One is clad in white garments, adorned with white garlands and ointments.
रक्ताम्बरधरा चान्या रक्तस्रगनुलेपना
Another wears red garments, with red garlands and ointments.
पीताम्बरा पीरवर्णा पीतमाल्यानुलेपना
One is dressed in yellow, golden in hue, adorned with yellow garlands and ointments.
नीलाम्बरा नीमाल्या नीलगन्धामनुलेपना
One is clad in blue, with blue garlands, blue fragrances, and ointments.
या सा श्वेताम्भरा श्वेता सत्त्वाढ्या कुञ्जरस्थिता
She who is dressed in white, pure, endowed with virtue, is seated upon an elephant.
या रक्ता रक्तवसना वाजिस्था रजसान्विता
She who is red, clad in red garments, mounted on a horse, is endowed with passion.
पीताम्बरा या सुभगा रथस्था कनकप्रभा
The auspicious one, dressed in yellow, radiant as gold, is seated in a chariot.
नीलवस्त्रालिसदृशी या चुर्थी वृषस्थिता
She who is like a cluster of blue garments, the fourth, is mounted upon a bull.
विप्राद्याः श्वेतरूपां तां कथयन्ति सरस्वतीम्
The Brahmins and others call that white-formed one Sarasvati.
क्षत्रिया रक्तवर्णां तां जयश्रीमिति शंसिरे
The Kshatriyas declare that red-hued one to be Jayashri.
वैश्यास्तां पीतवसनां कनकाङ्गीं सदैव हि
The Vaishyas always revere her who is clad in yellow garments and has a golden body.
शूद्रास्तां नीलवर्णाङ्गीं स्तुवन्ति च सुभक्तितः
The Shudras, with great devotion, praise her whose body is blue in color.
एवं विभक्तास्ता नार्यस्तेन देवेन चक्रिणा
Thus were those women distinguished by that god who bears the discus.
इतिहासपुराणानि वेदाः साङ्गास्तथोक्तयः
The histories, the ancient tales, the Vedas with their branches, and the prescribed instructions—
मुक्तासुवर्णरजतं रथाश्वगजभूषणम्
Pearls, gold, silver, chariots, horses, elephants, and ornaments—
गोमहिष्यः खरोष्ट्रं च सुवर्णाम्बरभूमयः
Cows, buffaloes, donkeys, camels, lands of gold and garments—
सर्वासामपि जातीनां जातिरेका प्रतिष्ठिता
Among all the various classes, there is established but one origin.
