एताभ्यां भर्तृपूजासु तच्चिन्तासु स्थितं मनः
Their minds remained fixed on honoring their husbands and on such thoughts.
तत्र प्रयान्ति कामार्त्ता मदविह्वलितेन्द्रियाः
There, those tormented by desire, with senses bewildered by passion, go.
अनुडजग्मुर्यथा मत्तं करिण्य इव कुञ्जरम्
They followed after him as female elephants follow a maddened elephant.
क्रोधान्विताब्रुवन्सर्वे लिङ्गे ऽस्य पततां भुवि
All, filled with anger, said: 'May his emblem fall to the ground!'
अन्तर्द्धानं जगामाथ त्रिशूली नीललोहितः
Then the three-pronged, blue-red one vanished from sight.
रसातलं विवेशाशु ब्रह्मण्डं चोर्ध्वतो ऽभिनत्
He swiftly entered the netherworld and pierced the cosmic egg from above.
पातालभुवनाः सर्वे जङ्गमाजङ्गमैर्वृताः
All the realms of Pātāla were filled with moving and unmoving beings.
जगाम माधवं द्रष्टुं क्षीरोदं नाम सागरम्
He went to see Mādhava at the ocean called Kṣīroda.
उवाच देव भुवनाः किमर्थ क्षुभिता विभो
He said: 'O Lord of the worlds, for what reason are the worlds disturbed, O Mighty One?'
पातितस्तस्य भारार्ता संचचाल वसुंधरा
When it fell, the earth, burdened by its weight, trembled.
तत्र गच्छाम देवेश एवमाह पुनः पुनः
'Let us go there, O Lord of gods,' thus they said again and again.
आजग्मतुस्तमुद्देशं यत्र लिङ्गं भवस्य तत्
They arrived at that place where the liṅga of Bhava was.
पातालं प्रविवेशाथ विस्मयान्तरितो विभुः
Then the Lord, filled with wonder, entered Pātāla.
नैवान्तमलभद् ब्रह्मन् विस्मितः पुनरागतः
O Brahman, he did not find its end and, astonished, returned again.
चक्रपाणिर्विनिष्क्रान्तो लेभे ऽन्तं न महामुने
The wielder of the discus went forth, but, O great sage, he could not find the end.
कृताञ्जलिपुटौ भूत्वा स्तोतुं देवं प्रचक्रतुः
With hands joined in reverence, they began to praise the god.
जीमूतवाहन कवे शर्व त्र्यम्बक शङ्कर
O bearer of the clouds, O poet, O Śarva, O three-eyed one, O Śaṅkara,
दक्षयज्ञक्षयकर कालरूप नमो ऽस्तु ते
O destroyer of Dakṣa’s sacrifice, O embodiment of time, I bow to you.
भवानन्तश्च भगवान् सर्वगस्त्वं नमो ऽस्तु ते
You are the infinite, the blessed Lord, the all-pervading one; I bow to you.
स्वरूपी ताविदं वाक्यमुवाच वदतां वरः
The Lord, present in his own form, spoke these words, best among speakers:
मां स्तुवाते भृशास्वस्थं कामतापितविग्रहम्
Those who praise me, though afflicted by desire and suffering, become truly at peace.
एतत् प्रगृह्यतां भूय अतो देव स्तुवावहे
Accept this, and again let us praise the god.
तदेतत्प्रतिगृह्णीयां नान्यथेति कथञ्चन
Let this indeed be accepted; in no way should it be otherwise.
ब्रह्म स्वयं च जग्राह लिङ्गं कनकपिङ्गलम्
Brahmā himself took up the golden, tawny liṅga.
तृतीयं कालवदनं चतुर्थं च कपालिनम्
The third was Kālavadana, and the fourth was Kapālin.
तस्य शिष्यो बभूवाथ गोपायन इति श्रुतः
His disciple then became known as Gopāyana.
तस्य शिष्यो ऽप्यभूद्राजा ऋषभः सोमकेश्वरः
His disciple was the king Ṛṣabha, called Somakeśvara.
तस्य शिष्योभवद्वैश्यो नाम्ना क्राथेश्वरो मुने
His disciple was a Vaiśya named Krātheśvara, O sage.
कर्णोदर इति ख्यातो जात्या शूद्रो महातपाः
He became known as Karṇodara, a Śūdra by birth, but a great ascetic.
कृत्वा तु चातुराश्रम्यं स्वमेव भवनं गतः
Having fulfilled the four stages of life, he went to his own abode.
