पद्माः सुगन्धं निलयानि वायसा रुरुर्विषाणं कलुषं जलाशयः
Lotuses spread fragrance, birds nest, the deer’s horn is sharp, and the waters are impure.
नन्दन्ति हृष्टान्यपि गोकुलानि सन्तश्च संतोषमनुव्रजन्ति
Even the cowherd villages rejoice with happiness, and the virtuous follow contentment.
सतां च चित्तं हि दिशां मुखैः समं वैमल्यमायान्ति शशङ्ककान्तयः
Indeed, the minds of the virtuous, by the faces of the directions, equally attain clarity, as the moon’s rays shine.
सतीमादाय शैलेन्द्रं मन्दरं समुपाययौ
Taking Sati, he approached the lord of mountains, Mandara.
रराम शंभुर्भगवान् सत्या सह महाद्युतिः
Shambhu, the glorious Lord, delighted together with Satyā.
दक्षः प्रजापतिश्रेष्ठो यष्टुमारभत क्रतुम्
Daksha, foremost among the progenitors, began to perform a sacrifice.
सकश्यपान् समामन्त्र्य सदस्यान् समचीकरत्
He summoned the Kasyapas and appointed them as members of the assembly.
सहानसूययात्रिं च सह धृत्या च कौशिकम्
Together with Anasuya, Atri, and also with Dhriti and Kaushika.
चन्द्रया सहितं ब्रह्मन्नृषिमङ्गीरसं तथा
Along with Chandra, O Brahman, and also the sage Angiras.
विद्वान् गुणसंपन्नान् वेदवेदाड्गपारगान्
The learned ones, endowed with virtues, accomplished in the Vedas and their branches.
निमन्त्र्य यज्ञवाटस्य द्वारपालत्वमादिशत्
He invited them and assigned the duty of gatekeeping at the sacrificial enclosure.
भृगुं च मन्त्रसंस्कारे सम्यग् दक्षं प्रयुक्तवान्
He properly engaged Bhrigu in the consecration of mantras.
धनानामाधिपत्ये च युक्तवान् हि प्रजापतिः
Indeed, Prajapati was appointed as the lord of wealth.
सशङ्करां सतीं मुक्त्वा मखे सर्वान् न्यमन्त्रयत्
Leaving Sati together with Shankara aside, he invited all to the sacrifice.
ज्येष्ठः श्रेष्ठो वरिष्ठो ऽपि आद्यो ऽपि न निमन्त्रितः
The eldest, the best, the most eminent, even the foremost, was not invited.
कपालीलि विदित्वेशो दक्षेण न निमन्त्रितः
Knowing him as the Kapalin, the Lord was not invited by Daksha.
किमर्थं देवताश्रेष्ठः शूलपाणिस्त्रिलोचनः कपाली भगवाञ्जातः कर्मणा केन शङ्करः
For what reason did Shankara, the foremost among gods, the wielder of the trident, the three-eyed, the Kapalin, become so by his actions?
प्रोक्तमादिपुराणे च ब्रह्मणाव्यक्तमूर्त्तिना
It is spoken in the Adipurana by Brahma, the one of unmanifest form.
नष्टटन्द्रार्कनक्षत्रं प्रणष्टपवनानलम्
When the sun and stars were devoid of vigor, and wind and fire had vanished.
निमग्नुपर्वततरु तमोभूतं सुदुर्दसम्
When mountains and trees were submerged, and everything was enveloped in darkness, exceedingly difficult to cross.
रात्र्यन्ते सृजते लोकान् राजसं रूपास्थितः
At the end of the night, he creates the worlds, established in the mode of passion.
स्रष्टा चराचरस्यास्य जगतो ऽद्भुतदर्शनः
The creator of the moving and unmoving in this wondrous universe.
शूलपाणिः कपर्द्दी च अक्षमालां च दर्शयन्
Displaying the trident, the matted hair, and the rosary of seeds.
येनाक्रान्ताव् उभौ देवौ तावेव ब्रह्मशङ्करौ
By whom both the gods, Brahma and Shankara, were overcome.
को भवानिह संप्राप्तः केन सृष्टो ऽसि मां वद
Who are you that has come here? By whom were you created? Tell me.
भवतो जनकः को ऽत्र जननी वा तदुच्यताम्
Who is your father here, or your mother? Let that be stated.
परिवादो ऽभवत् तत्र उत्पत्तिर्भवतो ऽभवत्
There arose a dispute there; your origin came into question.
धारयन्नतुलां वीणां कुर्वन् किलकिलाध्वनिम्
Holding a balance and a lute, making a clattering sound,
तस्थावधोमुखो दीनो ग्रहाक्रान्तो यथा शशी
He stood with head bowed, dejected, like the moon seized by a planet.
क्रोधान्धकारितं रुद्रं पञ्चमो ऽथ मुखो ऽब्रोवीत्
