विष्णुः कुजम्भं निजघान वेगात् स स्यन्दनाद् गामगमद् गतासुः
Viṣṇu struck down Kujambha with force; he fell lifeless from his chariot to the ground.
क्रोधान्वितः शक्रमुपाद्रवद् रणे सिंहं यतैणो ऽतिविपन्नबुद्धिः
Filled with rage, he rushed at Śakra in battle, like a lion at an elephant, his mind utterly deranged.
जग्राह शक्तिं यमदण्डकल्पां तामग्निदत्तां रिपवे ससर्ज
He seized a spear, like Yama's rod, given by Agni, and hurled it at his foe.
गदां च कृत्वा सहसैव भस्मसाद् बिभेद जम्भं हृदये च तूर्णम्
And swiftly, making his mace into ashes, he pierced Jambha in the heart.
तं वीक्ष्य भूमौ पतितं विसंज्ञं दैत्यास्तु भीता विमुखा बभूवुः
Seeing him fallen to the ground, unconscious, the Daityas became afraid and turned away.
वीर्यं प्रशंसन्ति शतक्रतोश्च स गोत्रभिच्छर्वमुपेत्य तस्थौ
They praised the might of Indra, and that son of Gotrabhit stood by Shiva.
एह्येहि वीराद्य गृहं महासुर योत्स्याम भूयो हरमेत्य शैलम्
Come, come, hero, to the house, great Asura; let us again fight, having come to the mountain.
रणान्नैवापयास्यामि कुलं व्यपदिशन् स्वयम्
I will not leave the battlefield, declaring my lineage myself.
देवदानवगन्धर्वान् जेष्ये सेन्द्रमहेश्वरम्
I will conquer the gods, Dānavas, Gandharvas, along with Indra and Maheshvara.
समाश्वास्याब्रवीच्छंभुं सारिथं सारिथिं मधुराक्षरम्
He comforted and spoke to Shambhu, the charioteer, sweet words.
यावन्निहन्मि बाणैघैः प्रमथामरवाहिनीम्
Until I destroy with showers of arrows the hosts of Pramathas and gods,
कृष्मवर्णान् महावेगान् कशयाभ्याहनन्मुने
He struck the dark-colored, swift horses with the whip, O sage.
जघनेष्ववसीदन्तः कृच्छ्रे णोहुश्च तं रथम्
Sinking at the hips, in distress, they could barely draw that chariot.
संवत्सरेण साग्रेण वायुवेगसमा अपि
Even with the speed of the wind, it took a full year to reach.
सुरान् संछादयामास सेन्द्रोपेन्द्रमहेश्वरान्
He covered the gods, along with Indra, Upendra, and Maheshvara.
सुरान् प्रोवाच भगवांश्चक्रपिणिर्जनार्दनः
The blessed Janardana, wielder of the discus, spoke to the gods.
तसमान्मद्वचनं शीघ्रं क्रियतां वै जयेप्सवः
Therefore, desiring victory, quickly carry out my command.
भज्यतां स्यन्दनश्चापि विरथः क्रियतां रिपुः
Let the chariot be shattered, and let the enemy be made chariotless.
नोपेक्ष्यः शत्रुरुद्दिष्टो देवाचार्येण देवताः
The enemy pointed out by the preceptor of the gods must not be neglected, O gods.
चक्रुर्वेगं सहेन्द्रेण समं चक्रधरेण च
They rushed forth with speed, together with Indra and the wielder of the discus.
निमिषान्तरमात्रेण गदया विनिपोथयत्
In the space of a moment, he struck down with the mace.
शक्त्या विभिन्नहृदयं गतासुं व्यसृजद् भुवि
Pierced in the heart by the spear, his life departed and he fell to the ground.
सध्वजाक्षं रथं तूर्णमभञ्जन्त तपोधनाः
The ascetics swiftly broke the chariot with its good banner and strong axle.
गदामादाय बलवानभिदुद्राव दैवतान्
Seizing his mace, the mighty one charged at the gods.
स्थित्वा प्रोवाच दैत्येन्द्रो महादेवं स हेतुमत्
Standing firm, the lord of the Daityas addressed Mahadeva with reasoned words.
तथापि त्वां विजेष्यामि पश्य मे ऽद्य पराक्रमम्
Yet still, I shall defeat you—behold my valor today.
ब्रह्मणा सहितान् सर्वान् स्वशरीरे न्यवेशयत्
He placed all those who were with Brahma into his own body.
प्राह एह्येहि तुष्टात्मन् अहमेको ऽपि संश्थितः
He said, 'Come, come, O contented one; though I stand alone, I am ready.'
दैत्यः शङ्करमभ्यागाद् गदामादाय वेगवान्
The Daitya, swift, approached Shankara wielding his mace.
शूलपाणिर्गिरिप्रस्थे पदातिः प्रत्यतिष्ठत
The wielder of the trident stood on the mountain slope, facing him on foot.
