व्रणभङ्गं करिष्यामि स्वयमेव पिनाकिनः
I myself will heal the wounds of Pinākin.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा वचनं समत्थाय वरासनात्
Having thus spoken, she confirmed her words and rose from her noble seat.
शूलपाणेस्ततः स्थित्वा रूपं चिह्नानि यत्नतः
Then, standing before the wielder of the trident, she carefully observed his form and its marks.
सा ज्ञात्वा दानवं रौद्रं मायाच्छादितविग्रह्म्
She recognized the fierce demon, whose body was concealed by illusion.
देव्याश्चिन्तितमाज्ञाय सुन्दं त्यक्त्वान्धको ऽसुरः
Perceiving the goddess’s thought, the demon Andhaka abandoned Sunda.
समाद्रवत दैतेयो येन मार्गेण सागमत्
The Daitya rushed along the path by which she had gone.
तमापतन्तं दृष्ट्वैव गिरिजा प्राद्रवद् भयात्
Seeing him charging, Girijā fled in fear.
तत्राप्यनुजगामासौ मदान्धो मुनिपुङ्गव
That intoxicated one pursued her even there, O best of sages.
तद्भयादाविशद् गौरी श्वेतार्ककुसुमं शुचि
Out of fear, Gaurī entered a pure white arka blossom.
नष्टायामाथ पार्वत्यां भूयो हैरण्यलोचनिः
When Pārvatī was lost, Hiraṇyalocanī again...
अन्धके पुरायाते स्वबलं मुनिसत्तम
When Andhaka entered the city, O eminent sage, with his own forces...
ततो ऽमरगणश्रेष्ठो विष्णुश्चक्रगदाधरः
Then Viṣṇu, best of the hosts of immortals, bearer of discus and mace,
शार्ङ्गचापच्युतैर्बाणैः संस्यूता दानवर्षभाः
With arrows released from the Śārṅga bow, he pierced the best of the Dānavas.
गदया कांश्चिदवधीत् चक्रेणान्यान् जनार्दनः
With his mace he struck down some, and with the discus Janārdana slew others.
हलेनाकृष्य चैवान्यान् मु सलेन व्यचूर्णयत्
Drawing some near with the plough, he crushed others with the pestle.
स चादिपुरुषो धाता पुराणाः प्रपितामहः
And that primeval person, the creator, the ancient grandsire,
संस्पृष्टा ब्रह्मतोयेन सर्वतीर्थमयेन हि
Touched by the water of Brahmā, which is composed of all sacred fords,
दानवास्तेन तोयेन संस्पृष्टाश्चाघहारिणा
The Dānavas, touched by that sin-destroying water,
दृष्ट्वा ब्रह्महरी युद्धे घातयन्तौ महासुरान्
Seeing the destroyer of Brahmā slaying the great Asuras in battle,
तमापतन्तं संप्रेक्ष्य बलो दानवसत्तमः
Beholding him as he charged, Bala, the foremost of Dānavas,
बलवान् दानवपतिरजेयो देवदानवै
The mighty son of Danu was invincible by gods and demons alike.
वज्रं परिभ्राम्य बलस्य मूर्ध्नि चिक्षेप हे मूढ हतो ऽस्युदीर्य
He whirled the thunderbolt and hurled it at Bala's head, saying, 'Fool, you are slain!' But it shattered.
बलो ऽद्रवद् देवपतिश्च भीतः पराङ्मुखो ऽभृत् समरान्महर्षे
Bala fled, and the lord of the gods, frightened, turned his back and withdrew from the battle, O great sage.
तिष्ठस्व राजासि चराचरस्य न राजधर्मे गदितं पलायनम्
'Stand your ground! You are king of all that moves and does not move. Flight is not spoken of in the kingly code.'
उपेत्याह श्रूयतां वाक्यमीश त्वं मे नाथो भूतभव्येश विष्णो
Approaching, he said: 'Hear my words, O Lord! You are my refuge, O Vishnu, Lord of past and future.'
आयुधं देहि भगवान् त्वामहं शरणं गतः
'Grant me a weapon, O Blessed One; I have taken refuge in you.'
प्रार्थयस्वायुधं वह्निं स ते दास्यत्यसंशयम्
'Pray for a weapon from Agni; he will surely give it to you.'
शरणं पावकमगादिदं चोवाच नारद
He sought refuge with Agni, and Nārada spoke these words.
एष चाहूयते जम्भस्तस्माद्देह्यायुधं मम
'Now Jambha is being summoned; therefore, give me a weapon.'
यत्त्वं दर्प परित्यज्य मामेव शरणं गतः
'Because you have abandoned pride and taken refuge in me alone—'
