द्वन्द्वयुद्धूं समभवद् घोररूपं तपोधन
A terrible duel took place, O ascetic rich in austerity.
कुम्भध्वजं बलिर्धीमान् नन्दिषेणं विरोचनः
Bali, the wise, fought Kumbhadhvaja; Virocana fought Nandishena.
वाणस्तथा नैगमेयं बलं राक्षसपुङ्गवः
Vana, the foremost of Rakshasas, fought Naigameya Bala.
दुर्योधनश्च बलिनं घण्टाकर्णमयोधयत्
Duryodhana, too, fought the mighty Ghantakarna.
संयोधयन्ति देवर्षे दिव्याब्दानां शतनि षट्
O sage among the gods, they fought for six hundred divine years.
वारयामास बलवान् जम्भो नाम महासुरः
The powerful great Asura named Jambha restrained them.
महौजसं कुजम्भश्च विष्णुं दैत्यान्तकारिणम्
Kujambha, of great might, opposed Vishnu, the destroyer of demons.
द्विमूर्धा पवनं सोमं राहुर्मित्रं विरूपधृक्
Dvimurdha confronted Pavana, Soma, Rahu, Mitra, and Virupadhrit.
अष्टावेव महेष्वासान् वारयामासुराहवे
All eight mighty archers resisted in battle.
वातापि चेल्वलश्चैव नानाशस्त्रास्त्रयोधिनः
Vatapi and Celvala, skilled in various weapons and missiles, fought.
एक एव रणे रौद्रः कालनेमिर्महासुरः
Kalanemi, the fierce great demon, alone raged in battle.
योधयामास तेजस्वी विद्युन्माली महासुरः
Vidyunmali, the radiant great demon, engaged in combat.
साध्यान् मरुद्गणांश्चैव निवातकवचादयः
The Sadhyas, the Marut hosts, and the Nivatakavachas joined the fight.
कृतानि च सुराब्दानां दशतीः षट् महामुने
O great sage, six sets of ten oceans of gods were created.
तदा मायं समाश्रित्य ग्रसन्तः क्रमशो ऽव्ययान्
Then, relying on illusion, they gradually consumed the imperishable ones.
आवृतं वर्जितं सर्वैः प्रमथैरमरैरपि
All were surrounded and excluded by the Pramathas and even the immortals.
क्रोधादुत्पादयामास रुद्रो जृम्भायिकां वशी
Out of anger, Rudra, the master, produced the Jṛmbhāyikā.
वदनं विकृतं कृत्वा मुक्तशस्त्रं विजृम्भिरे
Making his face distorted, he unleashed the Jṛmbhāyikā weapon.
सुराश्च निर्ययुस्तूर्णं दैत्यदेहेभ्य आकुला
The gods hurriedly emerged, distressed, from the bodies of the demons.
शोभन्ते पद्मपत्राक्षा मेघेभ्य इव विद्युतः
They shone with lotus-leaf eyes, like lightning from clouds.
अयुध्यन्त महात्मानो भूय एवातिकोपिताः
The great souls fought again, exceedingly enraged.
पराजीयन्त संग्रामे भूयो भूयस्त्वहर्निशम्
They were repeatedly defeated in battle, day and night.
काले ऽभ्युपासत तदा सो ऽष्टादशभुजो ऽव्ययः
Then, at the proper time, the imperishable one with eighteen arms was worshipped.
कृतार्थो भक्तिमान् मूर्ध्ना पुष्पाञ्जलिमुपाक्षिपत्
Having achieved his purpose, the devoted one offered a handful of flowers upon his head.
हिरण्यगर्भेत्यादित्यमुपतस्थे जजाप ह
He worshipped the sun as Hiraṇyagarbha and recited prayers.
ननर्त भावगम्भीरं दोर्दण्डं भ्रामयन् बलात्
He danced with profound feeling, forcefully whirling his mighty arms.
नृत्यन्ते भावसंयुक्ता हरस्यानुविलासिनः
Those devoted to the moods of dance, imitating Hara, also danced.
युद्धाय दानवैः सर्वैस्त्रिनेत्रभुजपालितैः
All the Daityas, protected by the three-eyed, three-armed one, prepared for battle.
दानवा निर्जिताः सर्वे बलिभिर्भयवर्जितैः
All the Daityas, fearless and strong, were defeated.
अन्धकः सुन्दमाहूय इदं वचनमब्रीत्
Andhaka, summoning Sunda, spoke these words:
