शुभानि सौम्यानि सुमङ्गलानि जातानी चिह्नानि जयाय शंभोः
Auspicious, gentle, and fortunate signs appeared for Shambhu's victory.
क्रव्यादसंघाश् च तथामिषैणः प्रयान्ति हृष्टास्तृषितासृगर्थे
Hosts of flesh-eaters and those desiring offerings, thrilled and thirsty for blood, proceeded onward.
शकुनिश् चापि हारीतो मौनी याति पराङ्गमुखः
The green bird, silent, turned away and departed.
शैलादिं प्राह वचनं सस्मितं शशिशेखरः
The moon-crested one, smiling, spoke to the mountain and others.
निमित्तानीह दृस्यन्ते संभूतानि गणेश्वर
Omens are seen here, O lord of the hosts, which have arisen.
कः संदेहो महादेव यत् त्वं जयसि शात्रवान्
What doubt is there, O Mahadeva, that you will conquer your enemies?
समादिदेश युद्धाय महापशुपतैः सह
He ordered battle with the great lords of beasts.
नानाशस्त्रधरा वीरा वृक्षानशनयो यथा
Heroes bearing various weapons advanced like trees uprooted.
प्रवृत्ताः प्रमथान् हन्तुं कूटमुद्गरपाणयः
They set out to slay the Pramathas, wielding spiked clubs.
ससूर्याग्निपुरोगास्तु समायाता दिदृक्षवः
With the Sun and Fire at their head, they arrived, eager to witness.
गीतवाद्यादिसंमिश्रो दुन्दुभीनां कलिप्रिय
Mixed with song, instruments, and other sounds, the drums resounded, delighting in battle.
गणास्तद्दानवं सैन्यं जिघांसन्ति स्म कोपिताः
The hosts, enraged, sought to destroy that army of demons.
क्रोधान्वितस्तुहुण्डस्तु वेगोनाबिससार ह
Tuhuṇḍa, filled with anger, rushed forward with great speed.
राजतं राजते ऽत्यर्थमिन्द्रध्वजमिवोच्छ्रितम्
It shone exceedingly bright, like a raised banner of Indra.
रुद्राद्याः स्कन्दपर्यन्तास्ते ऽभज्यन्त भयातुराः
The Rudras and others up to Skanda were seized with fear.
समाद्रवत वेगेन तुहुण्डं दनुरुङ्गवम्
They rushed swiftly toward Tuhuṇḍa, the leader of the Danavas.
परिघं पातयामास गुम्भपृष्ठे महाबलः
The mighty one hurled the iron club onto the back of the formation.
शतधा त्वगमद् ब्रह्मन् मेरोः कूट इवाशनिः
O Brahmin, it shattered into a hundred pieces, like a thunderbolt striking the peak of Mount Meru.
बबन्ध बाहुपाशेन राहू रक्षन् हि मातुलम्
He bound Rāhu with his arm-noose, for he was protecting his uncle.
समाजघान शिरशि कुठारेण महोदरः
Mahodara struck him on the head with an axe.
स मोक्षार्थे ऽकरोद् यत्नं न शशाक च नारद
He made an effort to free himself, but, O Nārada, he was unable.
प्रगृह्य तूर्ण मुशलं महात्मा राहुं दुरात्मानमसौ जघान
Seizing a mace swiftly, the great-souled one struck down the wicked Rāhu.
घटोदरो वै गदया जघान खड्गेन रक्षो ऽधिपतिः सुकेशी
Ghaṭodara struck with a mace, and Sukeśī, lord of the demons, with a sword.
संत्यक्तमात्रो ऽथ परश्वधेन तुहुण्मूर्द्धानमथो बिभेद
Then, with a battle-axe, he split open Tuhuṇ's head, which had just been abandoned.
पञ्चैककालानलसन्निकाशा विशान्ति सेनां दनुपुङ्गवानाम्
Five, blazing like a single fire of destruction, entered the army of the foremost Dānavas.
गदां समाविध्य जघान मूर्ध्नि विनायकं कुम्भतटे करे च
Swinging his mace, he struck Vināyaka on the head, on the temple, and on the hand.
कुम्भध्वजं चूर्णितसंधिबन्धं घटोदरं चोरुविभिन्नसंधिम्
Kumbhadhvaja, whose joints were crushed to powder, and Ghaṭodara, whose thigh-joints were shattered.
समभ्यधावत् त्वरितो निहन्तुं गणेश्वरान् स्कन्दविशाखमुख्यान्
He rushed swiftly to slay the lords of the hosts, Skanda, Viśākha, and the others.
शैलादिमामन्त्र्य वचो बभाषे गच्छस्व दैत्यान् जहि वीर युद्ध
Addressing the mountain lord, he spoke these words: 'Go, O hero, slay the Daityas in battle.'
बलिं सम्भ्येत्य जघान मूर्ध्नि संमोहितः सो ऽवनिमाससाद
Approaching Bali, he struck him on the head; bewildered, he fell to the ground.
