ततः प्रीतेन मनसा सस्मार सुरवर्द्धकिः
Then, with a joyful mind, Suravarddhaki remembered him.
त्वष्ट्राथ संस्मृतः शक्रो मरुद्गणवृतस्तदा
Then, at Tvaṣṭṛ's remembrance, Śakra came, surrounded by the Maruts.
समायातेषु देवेषु गन्धर्वेष्वप्सरस्सु च
When the gods, Gandharvas, and Apsarases had assembled,
जाबालेर्दीयतां ब्रह्मन् सुताकन्दरमालिनः
'O Brahmin, let the cave of Jābāla's daughter be given to the garlanded one.'
नन्दयन्तीं च शकुनिः परिणेतुं स्वरूपवान्
The bird, assuming its true form, sought to marry the delighted maiden.
बाढमित्यब्रवीद्धृष्टो मुनिर्मनुसुतं नृपम्
The sage, emboldened, said 'So be it' to the king, son of Manu.
ऋत्विजो ऽभूद् गालवस्तु हुत्वा हव्यं विधनतः
Gālava became the officiating priest and duly offered the oblation.
आदौ जाबालिनः पाणिर्गृहीतो दैत्यकन्यया
First, the hand of Jābāli was taken by the daughter of the Daitya.
ततः शकुनिना पाणिर्गृहीतो यक्षकन्यया
Then, the hand of the bird was taken by the daughter of the Yakṣa.
एवं क्रमाद् विवाहस्तु निर्वृत्तस्तनुमध्यमे
Thus, in this order, the marriage of the slender-waisted women was accomplished.
अस्मिस्तीर्थे भवद्भिस्तु सप्तगोदावरे सदा
At this holy ford, you all should always bathe at the Seven-Godāvarī.
बाढमुक्त्वा सुराः सर्वे जग्मुर्हृष्टा दिवं क्रमात्
Having said 'So be it,' all the gods departed joyfully to heaven in order.
भार्याश्चादाय राजानः स्वं स्वं नगरमागताः
The kings, taking their wives, returned each to their own city.
तन्मां कमलपत्राक्षि भजस्व ललनोत्तमे
Therefore, O lotus-eyed one, best of women, accept me.
स्तुवन्मृगाक्षीं मृदुना क्रमेण सा चापि वाक्यं नृपतिं बभाषे
Praising the doe-eyed one gently in turn, she too spoke these words to the king.
रक्षन्ती भवतः शापादात्मानं च मही पते
Protecting herself from your curse, O lord of the earth,
कामोपहतचित्तात्मा व्यध्वंसयत मन्दधीः
Her mind overcome by desire, the dull-witted one brought about destruction.
निश्चक्रामाश्रमात् तस्माद् गतश्च नगरं निजम्
He departed from that hermitage and went to his own city.
आश्रमादथ निरगत्य बहिस्तस्थावधोसुखी
Then, leaving the hermitage, she stood outside, unhappy.
महाग्रहोपतप्तेव रोहिणी शशिनः प्रिया
Like Rohiṇī, beloved of the Moon, scorched by a great eclipse.
पातालादागमच्छुक्रः खमाश्रमपदं मुनिः
Śukra, the sage, came up from the netherworld to his hermitage in the sky.
मेघलेखामिवाकाशे संध्यारागेण रञ्जिताम्
Like a streak of cloud in the sky, tinged with the hue of twilight.
कः क्रीडति सरोषेण सममाशीविषेण हि
Who plays with anger as one would with a venomous serpent?
यस्त्वां सुद्धसमाचारां विध्वंसयति पापकृत्
He who destroys you, pure in conduct, is a doer of evil.
रुदन्ती व्रीडयोपेता मन्दं मन्दमुवाच ह
She, weeping and filled with shame, spoke slowly and softly.
बलादनाथा रुदती नीताहं वचनीयताम्
Helpless by force, I am led away, weeping, to be spoken for.
उपस्पृश्य शुचिर्भूत्वा इदं वचनमब्रवीत्
Having purified himself with water, he became clean and spoke these words.
गौरवं च तिरस्कृत्य च्युतधर्मारजा कृता
Setting aside respect, she was made a queen fallen from righteousness.
सप्तरात्रान्तराद् भस्म ग्राववृष्ट्या भविष्यति
After seven nights, there will be ashes from a rain of stones.
त्वं पापमोक्षार्थमिहैव पुत्रि तिष्ठस्व कल्याणि तपश्चरन्ती
Remain here, daughter, practicing austerity for the sake of liberation from sin, O blessed one.
