सप्तगोदावरं तीर्थं सा मयैव विसर्जिता
'The holy place of Saptagodavara was abandoned by me.'
तत्रास्माकं समेष्यन्ति कन्यास्तिस्रस्तथापराः
'There our three daughters, as well as others, will meet us.'
शकुनिं पुरतझ कृत्वा सेन्द्रद्युम्नः सपुत्रकः
Placing the bird in front, Indradyumna set out with his sons.
सप्तगोदावरं तीर्थं यत्र ताः कन्यका गताः
To the holy place of Saptagodavara, where those maidens had gone.
विचचारोदयगिरिं विचिन्वन्ती सुतां निजाम्
She wandered about the mountain at dawn, searching for her own daughter.
किं बाला न त्वया दृष्टा कपे सत्यं वदस्व मां
'Child, did you not see her? O monkey, speak the truth to me.'
दृष्टा देववती नाम्ना मया न्यस्ता महाश्रमे
'I saw Devavati by name; I left her at the great hermitage.'
श्रकण्ठायतनस्याग्रे मया सत्यं तवोदितम्
'In front of the shrine of Shrakantha, I have truly told you.'
न हि देववती ख्याता तदाच्छ व्रजावहे
'Devavati is not known there; let us go, I will show you.'
पृष्ठतो ऽस्याः समागच्छन्नदीमन्वेव कौशिकीम्
Following behind her, they proceeded along the river Kaushiki.
द्वितये तापसाभ्यां च रथैः परमवेगिभिः
With two ascetics, in chariots of utmost speed.
घृताच्यपि नदीं स्नातं सुपण्यमाजगाम ह
And Ghritachi, having bathed in the river, arrived with fine merchandise.
दृष्ट्वैव पितरं पार्थिवं च महाबलम्
Seeing his father and the mighty king,
पूर्वं जटास्वेव बलाद्योन बद्धो ऽस्मि पादपे
Previously, I was bound by force among the roots of the tree,
सशरं धनुरादाय इदं वचनमब्रवीत्
He took up his bow with arrows and spoke these words:
यावदेनं निहन्म्यद्य शरेणैकेन वानरम्
Today, with a single arrow, I shall slay this monkey,
महर्षिः शकुनिं प्राह देतुयुक्तं वचो महत्
The great sage addressed the bird with these weighty, fitting words:
वधबन्धौ पूर्वकर्मवश्यौ नृपतिनन्दन
O prince, death and bondage are governed by former deeds,
एह्येहि वानरास्माकं साहाय्यं कर्तुमर्हसि
Come, come, O monkey, you ought to help us.
ममाज्ञा दीयतां ब्रह्मन् शाधि किं करवाण्यहम्
O Brahman, give me your command; instruct me—what should I do?
मम पुत्रस्त्वयोद्बद्धो जटासु वटपादपे
By you, my son was bound among the roots of the banyan tree.
तदनेन नरेन्द्रेण त्रिधा कृत्वा तु शाखिनः
Then, by this king, the branches of the tree were split into three.
दशवर्षशतान्यस्य शाखां वै वहतो ऽगमन्
For a hundred decades, he carried the branch but did not move.
स ऋषेर्वाक्यमाकर्ण्य कपिर्जाबालिनो जटाः
Hearing the sage’s words, the monkey released the matted locks of Jābāli's son.
ततः प्रीतो मुनिश्रेष्ठो वरदोभूदृतध्जः
Then the delighted best of sages, Ṛtadhvaja, became a granter of boons.
ऋतध्वजवचः श्रुत्वा इमं वरमयाचत
Hearing Ṛtadhvaja’s words, he requested this boon:
ब्रह्मन् भवान्वरं मह्यं यदि दातुमिहेच्छति
O Brahman, if you wish to grant me a boon,
चित्राङ्गदायाः पितरं मां त्वष्टारं तपोधन
O ascetic, make me the father of Citrāṅgadā, the daughter of Tvaṣṭṛ.
सुबहूनि च पापानि मया यानि कृतानि हि
And many sins have indeed been committed by me.
ततो ऋथध्वजः प्राह शापस्यान्तो भविष्यति
Then Ṛtadhvaja said: The curse shall have an end.
