कथं क्व कस्येति मुहुस्तथोक्त्वा निपातयामास विपन्नबुद्धिः
Repeatedly saying, 'How? Where? Whose?' in confusion, he struck down, his mind deranged.
चिच्छेद देवास्तु गतव्यथाभवन् देवं प्रसंसन्ति च पद्मनाभम्
The gods cut him down and were freed from distress, and they praised Padmanābha, the Lord.
अतः प्रसिद्धिं समुपाजगाम मुरारिरित्येव विभुर्नृसिंहः
Therefore, the mighty Nṛsiṃha became renowned as Mura's slayer.
ऊचुर्देवं नमस्कृत्य जगत्संक्षुब्धिकारणम्
Having bowed, they addressed the god, the cause of the agitation of the universe.
स तव्त्स्यति महाज्ञानी जगत्क्षुब्धं चरचरम्
He will remain, a great knower, while the world, moving and unmoving, is disturbed.
न तत्र देवं न वृषं न देवीं न च नन्दिनम्
There, neither the god, nor the bull, nor the goddess, nor Nandin was seen.
तान् मूढदृष्टीन् संप्रोक्ष्य देवान् विष्णुर्महाद्युतिः
Viṣṇu, of great brilliance, sprinkled those gods whose vision was deluded.
तमूचुर्नैव देवेशं पश्यामो गिरिजापतिम्
They said, 'We do not see the Lord of the gods, the husband of Girijā.'
तानुवाच जगन्मूर्तिर्यूयं देवस्य सागसः
The embodiment of the universe spoke to them: 'You have offended the god.'
तेन ज्ञानविवेको वै हृतो देवेवन शूलिना
Therefore, discernment has been taken from you by the god with the trident.
तस्मात् कायविशुद्ध्यर्थं देवदृष्ट्यर्थमादरात्
Therefore, for the purification of your bodies and to regain divine sight, with reverence,
क्षीरस्नाने प्रयुञ्जीत सार्द्ध कुम्भशतं सुराः
The gods should perform a bath with milk, using a hundred pots.
पञ्चगव्यस्य शुद्धस्य कुम्भाः षोडश कीर्तिताः
Sixteen pots of pure pañcagavya are prescribed.
ततो रोचनया देवमष्टोत्तरशतेन हि
Then, with one hundred and eight measures of rocanā, for the god,
बिल्वपत्रैः सकमलैः धत्तूरसुरचन्दनैः
With bilva leaves, lotuses, datura flowers, and divine sandalwood,
अगुरुं सह कालेयं चन्दनेनापि धूपयेत्
One should offer incense of aguru together with kāleya and sandalwood.
एवं कृते तु देवेशं पश्यध्वं नेतरेण च
When this is done, behold the Lord of the gods, and not otherwise.
यस्मिश्चिर्णे कायशुद्धिर्भवते सार्वकालिकी
By this practice, bodily purity is attained, enduring at all times.
त्र्यहमुष्णं पिबेत्सर्पिर्वायुभक्षो दिनत्रयम्
For three days, one should drink warm ghee, or subsist on air for three days.
षट्पलं सर्पिषः प्रोक्तं दिवसे दिवसे पिबेत्
It is prescribed to drink six palas of ghee each day.
तप्तकृच्छ्ररहस्यं वै चक्रुः शक्रपुरोगमाः
The gods, led by Indra, performed the secret of the heated penance.
विमुक्तपापा देवेशं वासुदेवमथाब्रुवन्
Freed from sin, they addressed Lord Vāsudeva, the Lord of the gods.
यं क्षीराद्यभिषेकेण स्नापयामो विधानतः
By the prescribed rite, whom do we bathe with milk and other substances?
मद्देहे किं न पश्यध्वं योगाश्चायं प्रतिष्ठितः
Why do you not see in my body the yogic powers established here?
सत्यं वद सुरेशान महेशानः क्व तिष्ठति
Speak the truth, O Lord of the gods: where does the great Lord abide?
दर्शयामास देवानां मुरारिर्लिङ्गमैश्वरम्
Murāri revealed to the gods the divine liṅga of sovereignty.
स्नापयाञ्चक्रिरे लिङ्गं शाश्वतं ध्रुवमव्ययम्
They bathed the eternal, unchanging, imperishable liṅga.
बिल्वपत्राम्बुजैर्देवं पूजयामासुरञ्जसा
With bilva leaves and lotuses, they worshipped the Lord with devotion.
जप्त्वाष्टशतनामानं प्रणामं चक्रिरे ततः
Having recited the eight hundred names, they then offered their salutations.
कथं योगत्वमापन्नौ सत्त्वान्धतमसोद्भवौ
How did those beings, born of darkness and ignorance, attain yogic power?
