चतुद्र्दशममोवोक्तं नरकं तद् विगर्हितम्
The fourteenth hell is declared as that which is condemned.
स्मृतं तत् पञ्चदशममस्त्यवचनानि च
The fifteenth is remembered as such, and there are also other unspoken ones.
सर्वस्य चाततायित्वलमावासेष्वग्निदीपनम्
The kindling of fire in all dwellings is the mark of universal hospitality.
ईर्षर्याभावश्च सत्येषु उद्धृत्तं तु विगर्हितम्
The absence of envy in those who are truthful, but arrogance is censured.
संयुक्तः प्रीणयेद् देवं संतत्या जगतः पतिम्
One who is endowed with these should please the Lord of the universe through continuity.
पुंनामनरकं घोरं विनाशयति सर्वतः
He destroys the dreadful hell named after men, in every way.
अतः परं प्रवक्ष्यामि शेषपापस्य लक्षणम्
Now I shall declare further the characteristics of the remaining sin.
पितृणां च द्विजश्रेष्ठ सर्वर्वणेषु चैकता
And, O best of twice-born, the unity of all castes with the ancestors.
मत्स्यादश्च महापापमगम्यागमनं तथा
Eating fish and the like, and the great sin of going to forbidden places.
स्वदोषाच्छादनं पापं परदोषप्रकाशनम्
Concealing one's own faults is sinful, as is exposing the faults of others.
टाकित्वं तालवादित्वं नाम्ना वाचाप्यधर्मजम्
Mockery, beating time with the palm, and unrighteous speech by name.
एतैश्च पापैः संयुक्तः प्रीणयेद् यदि शङ्करम्
If one, joined with these sins, seeks to please Śaṅkara—
शारीरं वाचिकं यत् तु मानसं कायिकं तथा
Whatever is bodily, verbal, mental, or physical—
भ्रातृभिर्बान्धवैश्चापि तस्मिन् जन्मनि धर्मज
By brothers and relatives also, in that birth, O righteous one—
विपरीते भवेत् साध्य विपरीतः पदक्रमः
If the order is reversed, the result will be contrary.
सेषात् तारयते शिष्यः सर्वतो ऽपि हि पुत्रकः
From the remainder, the disciple saves, and above all, the son.
त्रिः सत्यं तव पुत्रो ऽहं देव योगं वदस्व मे
"I am truly your son, O Lord; tell me the union (yoga)."
दास्येते च ततः सूनुर्दायादो मे ऽसि पुत्रक
"Then, the son will receive; you are my heir, O son."
येयं हि भवता प्रोक्ता तां मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि
"That which has been spoken by you, you should explain to me."
प्राह प्रहस्य भगवान् क्श्रुणु वत्सेति नारद
The Blessed One, smiling, said: "Listen, O Nārada, my child."
गुढोत्पन्नो ऽपविद्धश्च दायादा बान्धवास्तु षट्
Born of molasses or abandoned, the heirs and relatives are six.
गोत्रस्म्यं कुले वृत्तिः प्रतिष्ठ शाश्वती तथा
In the lineage, the family, the occupation, and the lasting establishment are likewise so.
स्वयेदत्तः पारशवः षडदायादबन्धवाः
Self-given and born of another, these six are heirs and relatives.
नामधारका एवेह न गोत्रकुलसंमताः
Here, only those who bear the name are recognized, not those accepted by lineage or family.
उवाचैषां विशेषं मे ब्रह्मन् व्याख्यातुमहसि
O Brahman, you have spoken; I wish to explain their distinctions.
औरसो यः स्वयं जातः प्रतिबिम्बमिवात्मनः
The one who is born directly, as a reflection of oneself, is the natural son.
भार्या ह्यनातुरा पुत्रं जनयेत् क्षेत्रजस्तु सः
A wife who is not ill gives birth to a son; he is called the kṣetrajā.
मित्रपुत्रं मित्रदत्तं कृत्रिमं प्राहुरुत्तमाः
The son of a friend, or one given by a friend, is called adopted by the wise.
बाह्मतः स्वयमानीतः सो ऽपविद्धः प्रकीर्तितः
One brought by force from another is called abandoned.
मूल्यैर्गृहीतः क्रीतः स्याद् द्विविधः स्यात् पुनर्भवः
One obtained by payment is called purchased; and there is a twofold remarried.
