सप्तसारस्वतः प्रादान्मातरश्चतुरोद्भुताः
The seven Sarasvatas gave the four wondrous Mothers.
एकचूडां नागतीर्थः कुरुक्षेत्रं पलासदाम्
Nāgatīrtha gave Ekacūḍā, and Kurukṣetra gave Palāsadā.
चौण्डीं भैण्डीं योगभैण्डीं प्रादाच्चरणपावनः
He, the purifier of feet, bestowed Cauṇḍī, Bhaiṇḍī, and Yogabhaiṇḍī.
शकघण्टां शतानन्दां तथोलूखलमेखलाम्
He gave Śakaghaṇṭā, Śatānandā, as well as Olūkhala and Mekhalā.
सुषमामैकचूडां च देवीं धमधमां तथा
He granted Suṣamā, Ekacūḍā, and also the goddess Dhamadhamā.
सुनक्षत्रां कद्रुलां च सुप्रभातां मुङ्गलाम्
He gave Sunakṣatrā, Kadrulā, Suprabhātā, and Muṅgalā.
कोटरामूर्ध्वणीं च श्रीमतीं बहुपुत्रिकाम्
He bestowed Koṭarāmūrdhvaṇī, Śrīmatī, and Bahuputrikā.
सूपलां मधुकुम्भां च ख्यातिं दहदहां पराम्
He gave Sūpalā, Madhukumbhā, Khyāti, and Parā Dahadahā.
संतानिकां विकलिकां क्रमश्चत्वरवासिनीम्
He granted Saṃtānikā, Vikalikā, and the one residing in four places, step by step.
रौद्रा कर्कटिका तुण्डा श्वेततीर्थो ददौ त्विमाः
He gave Raudrā, Karkaṭikā, Tuṇḍā; Śvetatīrtha bestowed these.
ददौ मयूरं स्वसुतं महाजवं तथारुणस्ताम्रचूडं च पुत्रम्
He gave the peacock, his own son, Mahājava, and also Aruṇa and Tāmracūḍa as sons.
मालां हरिः शूलधरः पताकां कण्ठे च हारं मघवानुरस्तः
Hari, the wielder of the trident, gave a garland; Maghavan, adorned with a necklace, gave a banner for the neck.
सैन्याधिपत्ये स कृतो भवेन रराज सूर्येव महावपुष्मान्
He was made commander of the army by Bhava, and shone like the sun, possessing great form.
प्रणिपत्य भवं भक्त्या गिरिजां पावकं शुचिम्
Having bowed with devotion to Bhava, Girijā, Pāvaka, and Śuci—
ब्रह्माणं च नमस्कृत्य इदं वचनमब्रवीत्
And having saluted Brahmā, he spoke these words:
युष्मत्प्रसादाज्जेष्यामि शत्रू महिषतारकौ
By your grace, I shall conquer the enemies, Mahiṣa and Tāraka.
दीयतां ब्रह्मणा सार्द्धमनुज्ञ मम साम्प्रतम्
Let permission be given to me now, together with Brahmā.
मुखं निरीक्षन्ति सुराः स्रेवे विगतसाध्यमाः
The gods gaze upon the face, their hopes exhausted.
आदाय दक्षिणे पाणौ स्कन्दान्तिकमुपागमत्
Taking it in his right hand, he approached Skanda.
वन्दस्व चरणौ दिव्यौ विष्णोर्लोकनमस्कृतौ
Revere the divine feet of Viṣṇu, honored by the worlds.
यस्यादरात् प्रणामो ऽयं क्रियते मद्विधैर्जनैः
She, to whom this reverential salutation is offered by people like me,
वक्ष्यते तव यो ऽयं हि महात्मा गरुडध्वजः
He who is being spoken of to you, the great-souled one with Garuḍa on his banner,
नान्यः परतरो ऽस्माद्धि वयमन्ये च देहिनः
There is truly no one higher than him; we and all other embodied beings are not above him.
तस्थौ कृताञ्जलिपुटस्त्वाज्ञां प्रार्थयते ऽच्युतात्
He stood with hands joined in reverence, seeking permission from Acyuta.
कृत्वा स्वस्त्ययनं देवो ह्यनुज्ञां प्रददौ ततः
Having performed an auspicious rite, the god then granted his consent.
शिखिध्वजाय विप्रर्षे तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि
O sage among the twice-born, you ought to explain this to Śikhidhvaja for me.
स्कन्दस्य विजयार्थाय महिषस्य वधाय च
For the victory of Skanda and the slaying of the buffalo demon,
स्वस्ति चक्राङ्कितकरो विष्णुस्ते विदधत्वाजः
May Viṣṇu, the unborn, whose hand bears the discus, bestow well-being.
पावकः स्वस्ति तुभ्यं च करोतु शिखिवाहन
May Pāvaka grant you well-being, O rider of the peacock.
काव्यः सदा स्वस्ति करोतु तुभ्यं शनैश्चरः स्वस्त्ययनं करोतु
May Kāvyā and always Saturn grant you well-being; may Saturn bestow auspiciousness.
